May is the eleventh child of Susan and Samuel Wilson. The days before lorries were used to transport cattle they were driven along the street. How frightened they were when a herd was being driven along Herbert Street by a neighbor who asked father if he would close the gate into the Power Supply. A ‘very quiet mannered cow’ charged him and threw him in the air. He was badly hurt and it is a wonder he wasn’t killed. Dad used to bring home beautiful creamy ice cream when he had been to the show. After leaving school May worked at home for years. Tables and floors were scrubbed until they were white. Her next job was to Stott's Cake Kitchen. The Cake Shop was at the front with tearooms behind. After working in the tearooms she worked in the cake shop. In 1942 May married Murray David Thompson, born 1921. When the war was on and after our wedding we moved to Christchurch. Murray was overseas and May was manpowered to Para Rubber Company making raincoats. The staff were all wives of servicemen and we were a happy workforce. Murray is a tall man and when he came back from the war was very thin and weighed just 6 stone 7 pounds. He returned to Invercargill where he was manpowered to McSkimming's Brick Works. Later moves were for the Railway to Blackball and Dunsandel and then to Invercargill where Murray and Miriam were born. A move to Christchurch was followed by one to Gore and then again to Christchurch. May and Murray now live in Kati Kati, Bay of Plenty where Murray is in his 10th season working with Kiwifruit.
