Ebenezer Backus was a prominent Norwich trader and the father-in-law of Connecticut Governor Jonathan Trumbull, Jr. The Connecticut General Assembly paid him for his services in the Mohegan Case hearing in 1738. It appointed him on a commission for Pequot affairs in 1749. From 1744 to 1750, at least, he had slaves Abraham, Caesar, and Frank, any of which may have been Indian. Backus was overseer of the Eastern Pequot Indians until 1766 and served on a legislative committee on the Mtohksin land petition (1762-1763). [1] [2]
