John was the second son of William Fraser and Margaret Moray.[1] His birthdate is unknown, 1346 is the year his father died and he was likely to have been born considerably earlier than that.
He was first mentioned in a charter granted to him by King Robert II on 18 June 1373, in which he was styled "filius quondam WIllelmi Fraser militis."[2][3] On 19 May 1376 his older brother, Alexander, granted him a charter of the lands of Auchinschogill, Loucardy, Plady, and Delgady in the Deveron valley, in exchange for the payment of a pair of gilt spurs on each feast of Pentecost, payable at Philorth.[4] On 2 March 1387/8 he received a charter of Forglen from the Abbot of Arbroath.[1] On 8 January 1388/9 he purchased the lands of Balhelvie and "duas villas de Ardendracht."[1]
John Fraser married Marjory, a daughter of John of Monymusk. There was one child from this marriage, a son John who died without issue.[1]
He had two illigitimate sons, Andrew and William, by unknown mistresses, who were both mentioned in the charter of Forglen (mentioned above).[1]
The date of John's death is unknown.
