Biography

Barney was born in St. James, Phelps, Missouri on February 19, 1861 to Samuel and Fanny (Gorman) Zeigler.

Barney first married Margaret J. Veach at the home of Thomas Veach on January 24, 1886 in Phelps County, likely in St. James, Missouri. Matthew Gorman is listed as the Justice of the Peace which was likely a relative of Barney's on his mother's side.

On October 11, 1886, their son, Fred B. Zeigler, was born to them in Houston, Missouri.

At some point his marriage to Margaret ended, either with her death (possibly childbirth) or their divorce.

Barney married Edith Jane Kirley Bell (born in Dec 1870 in Arkansas) on August 22, 1894.

They had a daughter, Gracie, born in June of 1899.

This was the second marriage for both Barney and Edith and her son Clarence Bell, born in September of 1891 was living with them in 1900 in the Lynch township which is just north of Houston, Texas, Missouri.

In 1903, land was granted to Barney Zeigler by the government. It was listed as "North half of the Northwest quarter of section 14 in Township 31 north of range 9 west of the fifth principal meridian in Missouri containing 80 acres" from the land office at Ironton, Missouri.

Barney was listed in the 1910 census as a farmer who owned his own farm free of mortgage. His son Fred lived on the farm next door with his new wife Myrtle Cole who had been married for a year and already had their first son, Estrel Fred who was born June 12, 1909. This was Barney's first grandchild.

Along with Grace O. (age 12), four other daughters are listed to Barney and Edith in 1910: Alma V. (age 9), Erma L. (age 7), Fern R. (age 5), and Ruth F. (age 3). All were born in Missouri.

In the 1920 Census, the family had moved to Willow Springs in Howell County, MIssouri which is not far from their previous home. Willow Springs is directly south of Houston as the crow flies and about 13 miles Southeast of Cabool. The single daughters listed in the household in this census are Grace O. (age 22), Alma V. (age 19), Fern R. (age 15), Ruth F. (age 13) and we see the addition of another daughter, Norma S. (age 4 5/12). Erma L., was not listed and would have been 17. She might have been married and left the home.

On Christmas Eve of 1927, Barney had to endure the death of his son, Fred.

In the 1930 Census, we learn that Barney has had no military service in his life. He and Edith still have Norma (with the initial "L" instead of "S") at 14 living with them and also their daughter Alma Hatsel who at 29 is widowed and doesn't appear to have children of her own.

Barney died August 27, 1931 at around 4 am in Willow Springs, Missouri and was buried in Burnham, Missouri, about 6 miles south of Willow Springs the same day according to the death certificate.

Edith eventually moved back to Arkansas. According to the 1940 census on April 1, 1940, she was living in Little Rock, Pulaski, Arkansas in a State Hospital for Nervous Diseases, Benton Unit. She died in Pulaski County, Arkansas on Feb 12, 1947.

  • Although we have multiple records stating that Barney was born in 1861, the 1860 census lists him as 4 months old. Either the other records are off by a year or Barney was named after a deceased infant brother when he was born the following February.
