Biography

Teresa "Tessie"Frances Butler was born in Carrandangan (Carrowndangan), Castleplunket, Castlerea, County Roscommon on the 17th June, 1883. Her Parents were Michael Butler and Kate Flanagan Butler.^[1]
On her father’s retirement as sergeant in the Royal Irish Constabulary, she moved with her family to Moate, County Westmeath. They lived in 2 St Anthony’s Terrace, Moate, just a few miles from her mother’s original home at Moyvoughle. In Moate Tessie worked as a teacher^[2]

Marriage of Tessie Butler to Dennis Barnicle

On the 18th August 1909 Tessie married Dennis Barnicle in Moate parish church.^[3] Dennis Barnicle was born in 1883 in Drimshinagh, Claremorris, County Mayo. His parents were Martin Barnicle, a farmer and his mother Ellen Donnellon Barnicle.^[4] Denis worked in the grocery business first in Ballyhaunis ^[5] and later in Moate.

Emigrants to U.S.A.

In the year following their marriage, they sailed on the ship “Oceanic” from Queenstown and arrived in New York on 11th May 1910.^[6] The "Oceanic" was one of the great liners of the White Star Line, though not quite as big as the "Titanic" which sailed its tragic voyage two years later. Conditions for the immigrants on board would have been similar. Tessie and Denis Barnicle settled in Hartford City, Connecticut.^[7]

The children of Dennis Barnicle and Tessie Butler Barnicle

They had two children, Helen and Katherine. Sadly Tessie died while the two girls were still young. She was buried in St Benedict's Cemetery, Bloomfield, Connecticut. Her two daughters continued to live with their father. For their holidays they went to their aunt Kitty in New York.

The two girls were:

• Helen M. Barnicle who married Harry O'Leary, a policeman with the railway.^[8]They had one adopted son Emmet. Helen Barnicle O’Leary died on 31st of May 1994 at the age of 82 years.^[9] She was buried in Wethersfield Cemetery, Hartford, Connecticut. ^[10][11]
• Kay Barnicle married Eugene F. Sullivan. Their children were Robert E Sullivan and Kathleen Sullivan. ^[12] They lived in Florida. Kay died in 1987.

In the Manifest he gives the name of his father as Martin Barnicle and not “Michael” as appears on the marriage certificate which appears to be a mistake.
