Udd Jönsson was a successful merchant and the mayor of the town of Vadstena on the eastern shores of the lake Vättern in the county of Östergötland.[1] His brother Lasse Jönsson was killed in his own house in 1551 and Udd raised his nephew Jöns.[2]
During the Dacke War, in 1542-1543, Udd showed the king his loyalty and was rewarded with freedom from taxes on two of his properties; Kedevad and Tistorp, both in the parish of Strå. [3] In 1560 Udd was the town citizen who payed the most taxes; 2 mark and 2 öre.[4]
When the Swedes had to pay ransom to the Danes for the fort Älvsborg the value of Udd, and his son Hans' property, reached 13449 mark. That was almost 1/6 of what the property of the citizens of Vadstena were worth together. The value of the stock of cattle on Udd's estate Tistorp was 105 mark and 2 öre. An ox was at this time worth 15 mark.[3]
In 1553 the skipper Håkan Persson from Söderköping sailed to Holland on the account of Hindrich Schutens and Udde Jönsson. The cargo consisted of rye, wheat, hides and tallow, among other things.[3]
Part of king Erik XIV's advisory council in 1565.[7]

Member of Parliament for the bourgeois in 1569 and 1571.[8]
Property
Udd Jönsson's house, a.k.a. Engelbrektshuset.[1] Udd bought the houses on the cornerplot by Storgatan and Rådhustorget in 1540. In 1559 he had expanded the plot and started renovations.[9] The value of the plot in 1560 was very high.[4] The Danes burned down a lot of buildings in 1597, during the seven year war, and king Johan III encouraged the burgeois to build new houses by giving them freedom for taxes for up to 12 years.[10] It is believed that the current house, called Udd Jönsson's house, was built in the 1570's by Udd or his son Lars. It had six shops toward Storgatan.[1] The mason was Pierre de la Roch, who worked mainly on the Royal castle in the town.[11]

The shop on the bottom floor had been pawned to a gold smith. October 8, 1580, the heirs of Udd handed over the deed to the house to Erik Björnsson who had gotten the inheritance rights to it by the king a couple of years earlier. [12]
