Herakuao or Hera as she was more widely known, was the daughter of Tamati Ngapora a Chief of Ngāti Mahuta and his wife, whose name was also Hera.[1] Hera's parents were also first cousins, the preferred Maori marriage, particularly for the high-born. A genealogy table constructed by George Graham shows the precise connections between Hera's parents as well her connection to King Tawhiao, who she married.[2]
Hera's connection to her husband, Tawhiao. |
Hera married King Tawhiao[3] around 1850. This date is surmised by the births of their children. The eldest Tiahuia, was born around 1852 and their next child Mahuta, later - King Mahuta, was born around 1854.[4] Both children were born at Whatiwhatihoe, so it is more than likely that is where Tawhiao and Hera were married.
