Note: Gordon Bishop Rogers was born June 26th, 1885 in Leeville, Tennessee. Bishop was his mothers maiden name. 2 Gordon's father, Asa John Rogers, owned and ran a General Store. The General Store was located next to the railroad and Gordon's father was also the local agent for the North Carolina and Saint Louis railways for over 40 years. 2 In 1893, when Gordon was 8 years old, his mother died. Gordon's father remarried a year later, but Gordon didn't like his stepmother. 2 After Gordon graduated from Mt. Vernon High School in Leeville, he attended Cumberland University in Lebanon in 1902 and 1903. It appears he did not graduate and receive a degree from Cumberland. 2 Gordon then moved to Nashville, Tennessee where he worked for the Bemis Bag Company for about 2 years. 2 In about 1904, Gordon started working for the Cumberland Telephone and Telegraph Company in Nashville, Tennessee. He started out in an entry level position and eventually worked in the auditing department. He worked for this company until July 1, 1909 when he submitted his resignation to the Cumberland Telephone and Telegraph Company and moved to Texas. 2 In 1910, Gordon is listed in the Dallas, Texas federal census as living with his sister Edna and her family (husband Arthur M Betty and son John Rogers Betty). Gordon is listed as being single and his occupation is listed as Accountant for the Telephone Company. In the 1910 Worley's Dallas City Directory, Gordon B. Rogers is listed as a clerk for the South West Telegraph and Telephone Company which was located at the south east corner of Jackson street and South Akard street. He is a boarder living at 125 Sycamore". 2 Gordon started working for Armour Meat Company in 1912. He worked in a number of cities for Armour including Hattysburg, Mississippi. 2

Military WW1 When World War I started, Gordon volunteered and joined the Army Air Corps. The Army Air Corps was part of the Signal Corps at that time. Gordon was called into service as a 1st Lt. on November 27, 1917. After being called into service, he reported to the Leon Springs Training Camp at Camp Stanley at Leon Springs Texas. He then was transferred to Kelly Field at San Antonio, Texas where he was assigned to Training Brigade #2 on December 28, 1917. From February 4th - March 2nd, 1918, he completed Garrison School at Kelly Field. On March 14th, 1918, he was transferred to Wilbur Wright Field, in Fairfield, Ohio. There he was assigned to the Armorers School in the Aviation Section of the Signal Reserve Corps. On August 17, 1918, he was transferred to Hobeken, New Jersey., Newport News, Virginia, Garden City and New York. Gordon left on a ship from New York to France at 3pm on August 26, 1918. The ship arrived at Harbor Breste in France at 12 noon on September 3. In France, Gordon was at the Aerial Gunnery School and taught the airplane pilots how to shoot the machine guns that were attached to their aircraft. One of the guns used was the Marlin machine gun. It was a modified version of the U.S. Colt-Browning 0.30 inch machine gun. The Marlin was gas operated and air cooled and was loaded via a 250 round belt. Its cyclic firing rate was some 650 rounds per minute. The weapon offered the advantage of working well with the aircraft interrupter gear (i.e. firing through the aircraft propeller blades). Gordon returned to the States on March 6, 1919 and was honorably discharged the next day on March 7, 1919. 2 After the war was over, he re-joined the Armour Meat Company. Gordon married Glenna Fisher in 1925. Promotions eventually took them to Texas. They first lived in Dallas, where Betty Jane was born. They then moved to Waco, Texas where John Gordon was born. They later moved to Texarcano, Texas and finally moved to Austin, Texas in 1937. 2 They had a home designed and built at 2009 Vista Lane in Austin, Texas. Gordon bought the empty lot next door (the house was built on 2 lots). Gordon paid $1,000 for the second lot. He thought $1,000 was far too much money for the lot but decided to buy it anyway. The second lot provided a very large back yard where they had many outdoor parties over the years. Gordon and Glenna owned this home until the late 1970's. 2 Gordon took two 10 percent pay cuts during the Great Depression. He told Armour Meat Company "thanks for the job". He was lucky to retain his position during the depression. Armour allowed him to take a little meat home during the depression. 2 Gordon and Glenna had a full time maid for many years. Corine, a black woman, helped with the housework and helped raise the children. 2 Gordon retired from Armour & Company in 1947 as a Branch Manager of the Armour plant in Austin Texas. 2 After retirement, Gordon and Glenna bought a trailer home and traveled through the U.S. and Mexico on vacations. 2 In 1953, they bought a second home (summer cabin) in Rockport, Texas. The named the home "Suitsus" (suits us). They owned this second home for about 10 years. While in Rockport, they would fish and relax with friends and family that would visit. 2 They sold the home in Rockport in the early 1960's and bought a second home (summer cabin) in Woodland Park, Colorado in about 1963. They owed this summer home for about 3 years. 2 Gordon had built a small workshop attached to the back of their Austin home. He built bird houses, chairs and other little wood working projects for himself and the grandchildren. At one time, he built bird houses for Jay, Nancy and Mary Elizabeth. 2 On June 21st, 1975, Gordon and Glenna celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with a party thrown by John and Betty at the Austin Womans' Club in Austin. 2 Gordon died of a stroke at his home in Austin on October 12, 1975 at the age of 90. The funeral was held at Weed-Corley Funeral chapel in Austin. Gordon was buried in Capitol Memorial Park in Austin. 2 2 Individual: Rogers, Gordon. Social Security #: 451-07-1865. Issued in: Texas.
