Born in 1617 Slingsby Bethel was son of Walter Bethell and his wife, Maria Slingsby. He was baptised at Alne in Yorkshire on the 27th of February 1617. [1] [2]As a younger son he was expected to make his own way in the world and was sent to Hamburg to learn about business where he remained until December 1649. Returned to England he was member of Parliament for Knaresborough in 1659 [1] and was opposed to giving Richard Cromwell the powers his father had previously enjoyed.[3]
He is said to have married a girl from Huntingdonshire, Mary Burrell.[2][1]
Slingsby kept out of the public eye for many years after the Restoration but eventually became a member of the notorious Green Ribbon Club, virulently anti-catholic and opposed to the succession of James Duke of York.[4]
Slingsby died in London on the 4th of February 1697. [5][1]
