Research Notes
Upon further research, I discovered John was a crew member on a solo bombing mission over Japanese held Jaluit Atoll in the Marshall Islands on 13, Dec, 1943 in a B-24D Liberator from Naval Bombing Squadron (VB-108). Though the mission was successful, the pilot was mortally wounded and the aircraft received heavy damage. While attempting to fly to a friendly airfield to make an emergency landing, the plane landed instead on Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands which was held by the Japanese. Subsequent examination of Japanese documentation revels John and two other members of the crew were questioned, but their fate was never known. Graves Registration declared the entire crew as deceased on 12 January 1946. From: Douglas E Campbell VPNavy!
