Famous Egyptian actor most noted for his performances in Lawrence of Arabia (1962) (Sherif Ali), for the title role inDoctor Zhivago (1965) and Funny Girl. He began his career in his native country in the 1950s, but is best known for his appearances in both British and American productions. He was nominated for an Academy Award in 1963, won two Golden Globes in 1963 & 1966 and won a César in 2004.
He converted in Islam in order to marry Faten Hamama in 1955.
