Notes

Note N84Copyright 1992 PERRY COUNTY TENNESSEE CEMETERY RECORDS Compiledby: Mary (Stewart) Bowen Melissa (Snyder) Bowen Summer 1992According to this cemebery book, she was born June 23, 1851(This date is in error due to the marker being worn, and thedate is actually April 1,1918, and this is what her deathcertificate has on it.) Roberts, Eliza J., 6/23/1851-4/1/1918,"Wife of J. N. Roberts" [Eastern Star symbol] I have a copy ofthe marriage record between James N. Roberts and E. J. Esslingerfrom Benton Co., TN or from the archives.http://www.rootsweb.com/~tnbenton/research.htm#Research BentonCounty Courthouse Court Square Camden, TN 38320 901-584-6053 Ihave seen her name spelled Essinger, Eslinger, Esslinger,Aslinger, etc. This is a German name. On the 1900 census ElizaJane is listed as Jane, wife of James N. Roberts. According toEliza Jane's death certificate, I have the followinginformation. She was born on June 23, 1854 and died April 1,1918 at 6:50 p.m., from hemorrhage of the brain at 63 years, 7mos, 18 das. She had lived at place of death for 9 yrs, 4 mos,9 das. She and her father were born in Sevier Co., TN. Herfather is listed as John Williams - this may be in error. Hermother is listed as Georgey Black (Black could have been herstep father's name), born in Sevier Co., TN. The informant wasJohn Newul Roberts of Britts Landing, TN. (I believe that thiscould be James Newell Roberts, her husband.) The doctor wasEdward Plotkin who signed the death certificate on July 9, 1918,and his address is listed as Britts Landing. Place of burial isStanding Rock Church and the undertaker was M. L. King(preacher), who lived at Britts Landing. According to theGenealogy.com database there is a record for: Eliza J.Esslinger was found in our data volume Kentucky 1851-1900Marriage Index which is part of the Genealogy Librarysubscription. If she married James in Benton Co., TN, thenmaybe she married Williams in KY. Nadolna, David in CANadolna, J in West Palm Beach, FL I got through GA with mysearches, but I need to use Internet Explorer next time.http://www.census-online.com/links/TN/Sevier/ There are sixEslinger/Esslinger families on the 1870 census records forSevier Co., TN. I should check the 1860 census, when I have achance. According to the 1870 Sevier Co. index, there were sixEslinger/Esslinger families. http://worldconnect.rootsweb.comhas Eliza Jane listed twice. Eliza was a member of the EasternStar according to information on her grave marker. According tothe 1920 Census, Charles is listed as being born in KY, hisfather in TN and his mother in KY. I should check the KY censusfor Eslinger. I (Davine) ran across a note made in the mid1960's before Earl died, that I made which listed Aggnew asEarl's grandmother on his father's side. However, BerthaAnderson Roberts later gave us information that listed Eliza J.Eslinger. (If they had been married before they married eachother, then Earl may have been correct when he said hisgrandmother's maiden name was Agnew.) Subject: Eliza JaneDate: 3/3/04 6:15:39 PM Eastern Standard Time From: SteelProcTo: DavineR My records show that Eliza Jane Eslinger was halfCherokee. I have no other information on her parents, though, and have no confirmation of this. My mother gave me thatinformation. I might haveeven gotten it from the Smoky Mountain Historical Society or theinternet. I've come across so much information over the yearsthat it's just impossible to know exactly who sent me whatinformation. Carole Subj: Re: Roberts Genealogy Date:6/11/03 12:22:55 PM Eastern Daylight Time From: K4umw To:DavineR Reply number 2 I have a chart that Jim Trull, AuntEva's son, sent many years ago. It looks like Eliza Jane couldhave been Elizabeth Janet. Her first husband was WilliamsWallingford She was born 6-23-1854, died 4-1-1918 marriedJames Newell Roberts, born 3-10-1853, d 12-22-1918. Hermother's maiden name could have been either Lennon or Black -not sure about either. General Francis Marion, b. 1732 d.3-27-1795 seemingly came from the Esslinger lineage. I think Iremember Jim telling me that it could have been by adoption buthe wasn't sure about that. This chart is huge so there's no wayI can copy it for you. Hope this helps. Wylodean Subj: Re:Eliza Jane Roberts' death certificate Date: 6/12/03 6:32:25 PMEastern Daylight Time From: K4umw To: DavineR Thanks for thedeath certificate. It printed just fine. Jim's chart listedWilliams Wallingford as the first husband (could be JohnWilliams Wallingford possibly). I don't know who John NewelRoberts was and why her name was Esslinger if her father wasWallingford. The plot thickens. What do you make of thebirthplace of the father and mother? Is it Lewis County?George says it's Perry County. Back in those days whoeverfilled out the death certificate, put whatever they couldremember so this probably is not the correct information. That'sthe only thing I can think of. You mentioned Eva Mae Roberts. Ihad earlier found the name as Effie rather than Eva. Do youknow for sure? Don Don, thanks for sending me this mew piece ofinformation. I did not have Ann's first name, and I had herlast name spelled with one "n". I am sure with further researchwe might find it spelled either way. I did not have themarriage date or place. I am glad we can share what we have, because this will help us both to further our research. I havedone basically all of my research myself with a little help fromHoward's Aunt Bertha (wife of John Wesley Roberts), and muchlater from Wylodean and the Trull chart (which I got fromWylodean). I am so glad that you have much the same info as me,which means that we have verified each other's info. Now, hereis what I can tell you about Eva. On the 1900 census, she islisted as Effie M., then on the 1910 census, she is listed asEvrie M. (or Evrvie M.). It is clear on the census, but stillnot easy to decide on the exact letters. I have not been ableto locate the Trull family on the 1920 census. They may havestill been in Tennessee, and I don't have access to the 1920Tennessee census on line. I do have access to the 1920California census, and I cannot find them in California.Wylodean reefers to her as Aunt Eva. When we first madecontact with each other, you told me where Eliza and James wereburied. I searched on line and found that she has an EasternStar symbol on her grave marker. Here are a few questions: 1.Do you know anything more about Eliza being in the Eastern Star, positions she held, and chapter, etc.? 2. Do you know whatchurch Eliza or James were affiliated with? 3. We both believethat James' middle name was Newell, but do you have any directdocumentation for this? 4. Do you have a marriage date andplace for Merideth Alfadane Trull and Effie/Eva Roberts, and doyou know where they were in 1920? Davine Your questions:Subject: Re: Eslinger Date: 3/7/04 1:26:04 PM Eastern StandardTime From: SteelProc Reply To: To: DavineR 1. I didn'tknow Eliza was Eastern Star 2. I don't know Eliza's churchaffiliation. 3. I have found reference to James Newell on RootsWeb in the past but that is all I have. I have no documentationof that, though. 4. I did not show marriage between Trull andRoberts. My records show that Eva/Effie was married to a Mr.Lee, but no further info on that...and not confirmed. Otherinformation. I show that Eliza Jane was married once beforemarrying James N. Do you have anything on that? I picked thatup from Roots Web also. Subject: Re: Eliza Esslinger Date:7/25/04 From: Reply To: To: SteelProc In a message dated7/2504 3:01:33 PM Eastern Daylight Time, SteelProc writes: Idon't know if I've shared this info with you or not. If I have, sorry. If your information on Eliza's ancestry is correct, andit sounds like it might be, I have located the attachedinformation through RootsWeb that reaches back to the 1500's.Yes, this is the same lineage I have. I do believe it iscorrect. She is listed as Jane in the 1860 census, and thisapparently was her preferred name, because she was listed inseveral later census as Jane on the 1880 and 1900 census, but onthe 1910 she is listed as Eliza J. I have not found her orWilliam Esslinger on the 1870 census. Have you found the familyon the 1870 census? Davine.
