Biography

James Drummond is a member of Clan Drummond.

Rev James Drummond, was born in 1629,[1] the third son of Rev James Drummond, 6th laird of Deanstown and minister of Fowlis Wester, Perthshire.[2]

He was the minister of Auchterarder, Perthshire, from ca. 1650 to 1658 and of neighbouring Muthill from 1656 to 1686. He was appointed Bishop of Brechin on Christmas Day 1684 and continued in this post until the abolition of Bishops in the Church of Scotland in 1688.[2] It was said that he had been promoted due to the favour of his relative, the Drummond chief, the Earl of Perth, then chancellor of the kingdom. [3]

Afterwards, he spent much time in the household of John Hay, 12th Earl of Erroll and son-in-law of the Earl of Perth, at New Slaines Castle, Aberdeenshire. He died unmarried of dropsy on 13 April 1695, aged sixty-six years old.[1] He died at New Slaines Castle and was buried in neighbouring Cruden. [4]

He is reported to have been a man of strict Protestant principles, and a decided opponent of King James' interference with the Church, though he, like most of his brethren, was a keen supporter of hereditary monarchy, and took a decided part with King James when the most of his courtiers deserted him.[2]
