Biography

There is some debate about her maiden name. Some have it as Williams, others as Miliner and even Milner. My interpretation of the only record we have to date is Milliner. The marriage declaration in done by hand and there are at least three capital letter M words there by the recorder, one being in the name Mary. The first leg of the M is a flamboyant upstroke with downstrokes for the other two legs. The dot over the letter i is a dot with a short tail downwards and there are two in the name. The letters l have a short heavy downstroke at the top of the letter and there are two of those. There are a number of examples of how he writes "er" at the and of words and this name appears typical. Putting all of that together you get Milliner. (1)

DNA relationship confirmed between various DNA tests done by the group (Hamilton-4105, Hamilton-1391, Hamilton-1390 and Hamilton-1394) and Carter-16806.

These two tests suggest that the DNA connection is on the Carter line but not through Berry Carter as he did not marry Anna Smith until 1883. Prior to that there is a marriage recorded between Geo Carter and Anna Smith in Shelby County, Tennessee in 1874. More work needed here.

Subsequent census records after her marriage have her as being born in Georgia which give an estimate of her birth year as around 1838. There is a Mary Miliner aged 10 in Clarksborough District, Jackson, Georgia in the 1850 Census, this could be her. There is one Mary Milliner in the 1850 census but she is 5 so that is not her.

I have stuck with Miliner as that seems to be the closest but that is an educated guess, further research may clarify the situation.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Mary by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Mary:
