Biography

Moses was Mashpee Wampanoag.

Moses Pocknett was a Native American. The Reports below were taken over a few years and the ages may be off a little bit:

  • In 1849, Moses Pocknett is 55yo. And a member of the Marshpee Wampanoag tribe in Marshpee, Barnstable, Mass.[1]
  • In 1861, Moses Pocknett is 60yo. And is listed as a member of the Marshpee Wampanoag tribe in Marshpee, Barnstable, Massachusetts.[2]

Birth

  • 10 Mar 1799: Mosses Pocknet was born in Mashpee, Barnstable, Massachusetts. He is the son of Elijah and Sarah Pocknet.[3]

Marriages

  • By 1834: Moses Pocknet and Mercy Moody are listed as husband and wife on a record of families created in 1834. First daughter Eliza was born 11 Feb 1834. Parents and other children are also on record.[4]
  • 1860: Residence[5]
  • The 1870 census records a recently married Moses Pocnet, age 72, to Julia A., 25; and a one-month-old Eliza.[6]

Research Notes

There may be a younger Moses Pocknett, but this is who we [who?] were always told our grandfather was. Paternity of Winthrop Pocknett is questionable. Any help figuring out this mystery is greatly appreciated.

When did Moses die?

  • He was alive in 1870 when he was recently married to Julia.
  • Julia gave birth to a daughter (Clara, later called Clarissa) in Jun 1874; only the mother is named BUT the clerk has chosen to record that the birth was "Legitimate". [7] This birth date calculates back to a September 1873 conception, and suggests that Moses died after that conception but before the birth of Clara the following June. It is odd, however, that Moses was not named as the father.

Melissa, more digging...

Julianne, Winthrop was my Grandmother's Farther. My Birthday is March 10, 1957. I find it odd that both Winthrop and Moses have the same date of birth other than the year. I think perhaps a clerical mistake could have been made on Moses's birth and death dates.

Hi Harriet! Was your grandmother my Great Aunt Harriet Pocknett? My Great Grandmother was her sister Lillian Temple. Would love if you'd be willing to add or correct any family info. Did you know my Grandma Pat or her brothers Carl and Walter Temple? Is it possible the tribe has Moses' correct info or at least agreed upon dates for his birth and death? Hope to stay in contact with you. Your cousin, Melissa.

Harriet,

The record that was made, recording Moses' birth date was made in 1834, long before Winthrop's birth. I have no reason to believe it's inaccurate.

Melissa, I wonder if he had two wives named Mercy.

There is clearly an 1834 marriage recorded for Moses to Mercy Moody (not Squib).

EDIT: I misinterpreted the record. It's a very strange record; see: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-8979-DDDV?i=10&cc=2061550&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3AQ29G-VCG9
There are dates in the birth columns that don't make sense; for all the family members, including parents as well as children, they're all in 1834, but different months. Any idea what this is about?
Disregard the remainder of my original comment below.

But his daughter, Louisa, who we know was born in the 1820s, lists her parents as Moses and Mercy.

Do you know where the "Squib" maiden name for Mercy comes from?

I guess it's possible that Moses and Mercy lived together as man and wife as early as 1825, but that the state did not recognize their marriage until 1834. OR he was previously married to another Mercy.

I think I finally figured out how this record works:

"Massachusetts Marriages, 1841-1915," database with images, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-65T9-P9D?cc=1469062&wc=3PMM-2NL%3A1042553901 : 27 October 2020), 004267381 > image 247 of 1042; State Archives, Boston.

It is saying how old someone was on a specific date [their birthday] in a specific year -- in most cases 1834. I've seen something similar in old (pre 1700) Yarmouth records. So... for example, Moses Pocknet was 35 on March 10, 1834. This translates to his birth date being 10 March 1799. Sigh.

Howdy Melissa,

There is a Moses Pocknett age 60 and Mercy S. Pocknett age 50 on this report. They are listed as members of the Marshpee Wampanoag Tribe. I hope this helps <ref>http://sites.rootsweb.com/~usnatttp/wampanoag/earlerpt1861.htm</ref>
