Agnes was born in Cadoxton See External Links just a short distance South West of Cardiff in South Wales on the 13th August 1887, She had an older Brother and Sister George and Ida May. The family moved about a lot due to her fathers work and 3 years on they had moved North to the Wirral, in Cheshire, Where she had a Brother Robert. The following year we should have found her in the 1891 Census but the whole family managed to miss the Census in April but in November she had another Baby Brother William Henry this time born in Saddleworth, Yorkshire.
Agnes's father George must have herd that work was available building the Dams in Elen Valley Mid Wales See External Links and they moved again. work started in 1893 building a village for the navvies (workers) including a school and a hospital and a railway to take the workers to the dams, It is probable that George got Hut 85 because it was in this hut that on 4th Febuary 1895 his Mother, Agnes's Grandmother died she may of just been visiting as no other records show her as living in the village. . . six months later Agnes got another brother birth registered in Rhayader so he was probably born in Elen Village.
Another 4 years pass and Agneses family enter a turbulent period of the family history, First in 1899 It appears her Mother dies in Bromsgrove when Agnes is only 12 years old why Mary is in Bromsgrove area we do not know why she is in Bromsgrove unless she was visiting family or friends in the area and then within 6 Months her Father marries again, this time to Emily who is only 2 years older than his eldest Daughter Ida May. This could be the reason that 18 months later in the 1901 Census Agnes now 14 is living with her older Sister "still in Elen Village" and not with her Father who has moved to Roath, Cardiff.

Three years after the Census Agnes is back in Yorkshire to Marry Thomas Hyde on the 3rd October 1904 in Healey, Agnes is just 17.
Four years later Agnes's first Baby but its not a Hyde baby its registered as Florance May Rice born in Llanharran, Glamorganshire, and 2 years later another Daughter Annie in Bleangarw, also in Glamorganshire, which is where they are living at the time of the 1911 Census,
On the 02 Apr 1911 these people in the table below, listed their details as being at the address, Wales in the England and Wales Census,
Household | Role | Gen | Age | Occupation | Birthplace | b.(est.) |
John Rice | Head | M | 28 | Coal Miner Hewer | Honiton | 1883 |

John and Agnes went on to have another 4 children in the next 9 years in 4 different places, Agnes in 1912 and Registerd in Bridgend, John Henry in 1915 Born in Bedwellty, Monmouthshire, Frederick in 1918 Registered: Merthyr Tydfil. Mid Glamorgan, and finally Joseph in 1920 born in Hengoed, Carmarthenshire, this may of been because they where not married, although they must have spent a few years in Hengoed as I remember my Father Joseph saying about going to school in Hengoed.
After 15 years and 6 children while moving around South Wales Agnes and John moved to Bournemouth on the South Coast sometime during the late 20's but it is also a sad time as Agnes's Father dies back in Newport, South Wales in December 1929 and then 12 Months later Annie who is only 20 years old dies in Bournemouth.
Monday the 9th April 1934 at 61 Southcote Rd, Bournemouth, must of started just like any other day as my Father Joseph new nothing about anything special going on, it was not until after Agnes's death that my father found out that on this day Agnes and John got married at the registry office in Bournemouth and the Witness's on the Marriage Certificate are George and I.M. Dymond probably Agnes's Brother and Sister Ida May.
I asked my Father Joseph about this when he found out and this is what he said, Agnes had been married to an Irish man who had been violent and abusive and that she had run away from him but as he was a catholic he had refused to give her a divorce I have not researched Thomas Hyde and can not say if he was Irish or Catholic. That's the story as told to me and I have no reason not to believe it.
The 1939 Electoral Roll shows they have moved to 50 Orcheston Road. Bournemouth. and Agnes is unpaid domestic duties housewife but it is the year of the outbreak of WW2 and with 3 sons all old enough to go to war, it must have been a very worrying time, The oldest, John gets married in 1939 and is off to war but within just a few months he is killed at Dunkirk on the 27 May 1940, he was 24.
Her middle son Frederick who in 1939 was working as a Lorry Driver and he joins the R.A.F. and is a driver for the R.A.F. in the U.K. and North Africa but he still finds time to get married in January 1942 to Gladys Stigwood,
Her youngest son Joseph is in the Army and spends the war on searchlights in the U.K. and then following the front lines all the way from the beaches of France to Berlin
In 1948 her third son gets married "Joseph" Married Phylis Mary Maton on 28 July in Bournemouth and at that time she was still living at 50 Orcheston Road, with her Husband John, 4 years later I was born "Geoff Rice" but only 10 months after that she lost her husband John who died on the 3 April 1953
I can only remember meeting my grandmother a hand full of times and remember her dressed in black sat by the fire on which she did some of her cooking as I remember her boiling an egg for me on the fire "it was giggly I hated it"
She continued to live at 50 Orcheston Road until her death on 11 November 1966
This is just my idea of a Biography for my Grandmother, I have said very little about her Daughters or her other Grandchildren, Its up to others to fill in the story, SO FEEL FREE to edit and improve the story or at least tell me so as I can add it == Geoff ==
