Francis Langhorne Dade was born February 22, 1792, the son of Townshend Dade (1760-1808) and his wife Elizabeth Dade.
Francis Langhorne Dade joined the Twelfth Infantry in March 1813 (during the War of 1812) as third lieutenant. He was then transferred to the Fourth Infantry in May 1815 during the Second Seminole War. Served with Andrew Jackson much of his military career.
Francis Langhorne Dade married Amanda Middleton by 1835.
Francis Langhorne Dade served his country in the United States Army 4th Infantry Regiment in the 1830s.
Brevet Major of the 4th United States Infantry regiment, a troop of United States soldiers who marched from Fort Brooke (now Tampa) in Florida on foot trying to reach Fort Dade (now Ocala), when they were ambushed by Seminole Indians on December 28, 1835, sparking the Second Seminole War in Florida Territory.
Dade and most of his men were killed in action on December 28, 1835. One or two survivors returned to civilization and told the story.
Dade County (Miami-Dade County), Florida was named after this Francis Langhorne Dade.
Francis and cousin General Lawrence Taliaferro Dade, were very close, went to school together, and practiced law together in Virginia briefly before the War of 1812.
