Research Notes

Samuel's official death date is April 27, 1909 in Faraday Twp, Hastings County, Ontario. Newspaper articles and excerpts from the book "Bancroft: A Bonanza of Memories" explain Samuel left his Bancroft home on April 26 to walk to work at Casselman's sawmill in Monteagle and didn't arrive. His hat was found beside Dutch Creek where it crosses Hastings Rd abt 2 miles north of the village. His body was found a few weeks later in the York River near the mouth of Dutch Creek, by Rathbun's Mill.

Samuel's wife Ada I find next in Greece, NY, near Rochester, marrying to a George McKenzie in Aug 1909. George was a brother of Ada's sister-in-law Christina McKenzie, who had married Samuel's brother James C. Moran. James C. and wife Christina had lost their Bancroft area house and barn in a fire in June 1908 and I believe they had relocated to Brockport, NY at that time and Ada and children had likely gone to visit or live with them temporarily after Samuel had died.

1910 census Hamlin Town, Monroe County NY has Samuel's children living with their mother Ada and her new husband George McKenzie. George McKenzie- head- age 32 born Canada arrived USA 1909 Ada -wife-age 30 born England -to USA 1909 James A. Moran -stepson- age 11 born Canada-to USA 1909 Ethel I. Moran -stepdaughter-age 8 born Canada- to USA 1909 Jessie M. Moran -stepdaughter-age 4 born Canada-to USA 1909

I know George and Ada and Ethel and Jessie end up back in Ontario but Samuel and Ada's son James A. Moran remained in the USA, married and raised a family.

1901 I find Samuel born Mar/May 17, 1872 Ont. with wife Ada born Sept 9, 1878 England and son James A. Moran born May 7, 1898 Ont. living in Tudor Twp, Hastings County page 4, line 10.

Tudor Twp is where daughter Ethel Isabell was born June 6, 1901. She was given the name Isabell McConnall Moran at birth but is going by Ethel Isabell Moran by age 8. I suspect Isabell changed her name adding Ethel when her mother remarried in 1909. I was told Ethel did not like the name Isabell.

Daughter, Jessie May Moran was born on Lot 25 Concession 8 of Faraday Twp in Oct 1905. I am not sure how close this was to Bancroft. Samuel's brother William was living on this same Lot in 1905.

Samuel's brother James C. Moran had children born on Lot 24 Concession 2 Faraday twp. This area is described as Lower Faraday in the newspaper article mentioned above. Their sister Susan Moran who married Patrick Finnigan also lived in Lower Faraday twp on Lot 17 Conc 2 and Lot 17 of Conc. 1 in 1901 total of 200 acres. This would be just a short distance down the 2nd Concession Road from her brother James C. Moran. By 1911 Susan and Patrick were still on Conc 2 but on Lots 16 and 17.

Samuel's marriage record for June 25, 1897 has his wife as Ida Williams b: England age 18 daughter of George Williams and Emma Kyle. Samuel as Samuel John Moran born Muskoka age 25 son of James Moran and Isabella. Both lived Rawdon Twp Hastings Co. married in Stirling by Methodist Rev Wm Johnston. All census records and childrens birth records that I have viewed so far have her as Ada. My parents called her Ada. Her headstone has her as Ada. Perhaps it was her British accent that led to the minister writing her name as Ida?
