"Marietta" Endicott (Peabody) Tree was an American socialite and political supporter, who represented the United States on the United Nations Commission on Human Rights, appointed under the administration of John F. Kennedy. [1] Her birth record and early census records show her name as "Mary" -- she was born 12 Apr 1917 in Lawrence, Massachusetts, the daughter of Malcolm Peabody. [2] [3] [4]

In 1939, she married Desmond FitzGerald, a lawyer and conservative Republican. The marriage ended in divorce in 1947. [5]

She then married Ronald Tree, a former Conservative member of the British Parliament. He died in 1976.

Mrs. Tree was appointed a representative to the U.N. Commission on Human Rights in 1961 and served as a special adviser to the U.S. delegation. She remained at the United Nations until 1967. [5]

In the 1980s, she was chairwoman of the Citizens Committee for New York City, a city-wide organization that tries to help neighborhood groups improve their communities. [5]

She died of cancer at New York Hospital Thursday, 15 Aug 1991. [5][6]
