Morris, Stone Have Early Winn Records.

Hasson Morris, Thomas S. Stone).

Both were born at Gansville, La.; Hasson Morris, October 3, 1885 and Thomas S. Stone, March 2, 1886. Hasson Morris is a great-great nephew and Thomas S. Stone is a great nephew of Dennis Mackie. Barton W. Stone's wife was Bethsheba Mackie, a sister of Dennis Mackie. Barton W. Stone and Bathsheba Mackie Stone were Hasson's maternal great grandparents and Thomsa S. Stone's paternal grandparents.

The Dennis Mackie papers, records and his compass that he used in surveying the original boundaries of Winn Parish and Winnfield in the 1850s is a priceless historical collection. Mr. Thomas S. Stone has the Dennis Mackie collection.

Hasson Morris owns the only Winn Parish Confederate record book that is know to be in existence, his grandfather, John O. Morris then as Confederate Tax Assessor for Winn parish, and he listed all taxpayers in the parish.

Hasson Morris and Thomas S. Stone are direct descendants of William Stone who was the first Colonial governor of the Maryland Colony in 1647/8, as was the Thomas Stone of Maryland, who was the 13th signer of the Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776.

Matthew Stone of Maryland, in 1793 was appointed Free Trade Representative of the United States to the Spanish Viceroy's Intendant, Don Juan V. Marsales at Natchitoches. After the United States acquired Louisiana, Matthew Stone with his family and his Mackie relatives settled in Natchitoches County (now Rapides and Grant Parishes, LA.).

D. M. Stone, a nephew of Dennis Mackie, assisted his uncle in making the original townsite survey for Winnfield in 1854. D. M. Stone was Thomas S. Stone's father.
