Biography

Lodovicus in Latin = Lodewijk in Dutch = Louis in French = Ludwig in German.

His titles included count of Loon (modern Borgloon in Dutch-speaking Belgium = French Looz = German Lon or Loos), count of Reineck (German), stadtgraf of Mainz (German).

He was also advocate of Averboden and Munsterbilsen abbeys, which are both in modern Belgium near the course of the river Demer, which runs through Loon ().

He was born circa 1100. He married Agnes de Metz, daughter of Folmar V, Count of Metz & Homburg and Mathilda von Egisheim, before 1140.

Baerten (p.46) gave the following summary of genealogically relevant evidence:

Death

In 1171 he died fighting the neighbouring county of Duras, whose young count Gilles, a cousin, was offended by his building of a fort in Brustem, between the castles of the two counts. This was reported in the second continuation of the Gesta of Sint-Truiden. The Latin in the edition of de Borman (Vol. 2 p.69):

Here is the Dutch translation by Lavigne (Vol. 2, p.60):

11 aug.

"Born after 1125" while the biography says "He was born circa 1100." and "He married Agnes de Metz...before 1140.".

That would have put him at age 15 at time the marriage which is plausible, but the birth date should be changed to "Born before 1125" rather than "after".

For now the article does not yet contain anything like a good summary of the primary evidence, and so "circa 1100" is not much different from before or after 1125. I would prefer to delete all estimates or make them all clearly intended to be rough, until we get the primary evidence laid out.

On the other hand, indeed if the marriage date comment is based on something solid, that gives us something to work with. And I think the first record of him, when his father was still alive, was at the founding of Averbode in 1135? This later fact would suggest that a first easy decision is to remove the after 1125.

Loos/Looz/Loon was Dutch speaking, so he should maybe be Lodewijk van Loon? He is also often called Louis in English books. His main overlords were in Liège which is French speaking, although they tended to be German families holding the prince-bishopric there.

Von Looz-8 and Von Looz-14 appear to represent the same person because: The same person, only different speling

Von Looz-14 and Von Looz-11 appear to represent the same person because: Both profiles clearly represent Ludwig I of Looz, whose daughter was married to Otto of Wittelsbach. Most current researchers (including Charles Cawley at Medlands) consider his father to be Arnold I, and his grandfather Arnold II. Older literature considered Arnold I and II to be one person. As a result one of the 2 Ludwig profiles was linked to Arnold I and the other to Arnold II. I've removed the link to Arnold I, and this Ludwig profile should be merged in the one linked to Arnold II
