Careful examination of the 1857 census reveals not only that Konrad was deceased by 1857, but that his sister in law was living in his household to care for his young son. Presumably this was because the child's mother was also deceased.
It can also be inferred that his sister in law was through his wife, a younger, unmarried sister, rather than one of his brother's wives who would have presumably used the Schäfer name in the census. Since Konrad died in 1850, it can be presumed that his sister-in-law was living in Konrad's household, raising his son Johann Jakob who was only 8 years old in 1857. There was likely an inheritance involved which Johann Jakob would have lost if went to live with other relatives.

Because of the timing of his death, there is a chance he succumbed to cholera. The third cholera pandemic swept across Russia from 1846 to 1860, killing more than 1 million Russians.
