Biography

Owain ap Maredudd of Iscoed in Ceredigion, Wales, was the son of Maredudd ab Owain.[1][2][3]

Bartrum records his mother as a daughter of Tomas ap Rhodri.[2] He cites Peniarth MS 129 (c. 1500) which states: "Mam Ywain ap M[ar]ed[udd] ap Owen ... ap Gr[uffudd] oedd v[erch] Domas ap Rodri ap Gr[uffudd]".[4] Cawley notes that his father had a wife Eleanor (see Research Notes).[1] According to Bartrum, his father had two other wives: Elen ferch Sir Gilbert de Valle, and Elinor ferch Maelgwn Fychan. However, the medival manuscript pedigrees do not record either of them as Owain's mother.[2]

When his father died in March 1264/5, his lands are said to have been divided between Owain and his brothers Gruffudd and Cynan.[1][5]

Owain married Angharad, daughter of Owain ap Maredudd ap Robert of Cydewain.[1][2] Lewys Dwnn's heraldic visitations of Wales, made between 1586 and 1613, records that “Owein ab Mddh ye sonne of Meredith ab Owein” married “Angharad doughter of Owein ab Middh ab Roppert”.[3]

Bartrum records that he had two wives. The other wife is named as Gwaladus ferch Owain ap Einion of Coed.[2]

His children are recorded as:

Owain died on 15 August 1275, according to the Chronicle of the Princes of Wales. This chronicle described him as "Owain son of Maredudd son of Owain son of Gruffudd son of the lord Rhys" and records that he was buried “at Strata Florida ... near his father”.[6]

His widow, Angharad, was living on 4 January 1278, when the king issued a writ to the Justices for the Marches of Wales. The writ said, "Angarad who was wife of Owen son of Maraduc ap Owyen claims to have a right in the commot Anhunaut within the land of Kardigan as that which the aforesaid Owen had assigned to her in dower".[7]

An inquisition post mortem was held at Kermerdyn on 1 October 1328, concerning the lands of Oweyn ap Mereduth. The jury found he had held the commote of Hanunyauk [Anhuniauk], a moiety of the commote of Gwynneonyth Uchkerdyn, and the commote of Kerwedros [Cayrwedros] at the time of his death. After his death, his son Lewelin ap Oweyn exchanged the commote of Kerwedros with his uncle, Gruffin ap Mereduth, and in return for the commote of Iscoyt Uchirwern. Gruffin later forfeited the commote of Cayrwedros by waging war against the king and it has since remained in the hands of the king of England for 52 years. The next heirs to the lands were Oweyn ap Lewelin [ap Oweyn] and Thomas ap Lewelin, both aged 28 years and more.[8][9]

Research Notes

Cawley quotes Bridgeman (p. 148). which says: "I cannot say positively who was the wife of Meredith; but we know that he[r] name was Elena and that he assigned her her dower in the commot of Gwynnionith [no citation, reference]. . . . The heralds call her Eleanor, daughter of Maelgwm ap Maelgwn ap Lord Res by his wife Angharad of Wales [no citation reference]."[1]

His birth is given as 1230 in a now-deleted Geni entry for Owain-ap-Maredudd-Lord-of-South-Wales, noting he was 45 at his death (but no source for age at death). That same Geni entry showed his wife as Elen verch Maelgwn Fychan, while another Geni entry (with Owain born 1243), shows Owain's wife as "Angharad verch Owain" and his mother as "Elen verch Maelgwn Fychan". (Deleting the one entry was possibly to correct the problem.)

Anhunog (supposed death location)[citation needed] = Anhunaut?[7]
Lord of South Wales...[10][citation needed]
  • Burke's has "Llewelyn ap Owen, Lord of South Wales, who m. the Lady Eleanor, dau. of Henri, Comte de Bar".[11]
  • Her profile suggests that Eleanor de Bar was fiction.[12]
  • I am not finding another source giving him this title, so have removed it from "Other Nicknames" ~ Noland-165 19:40, 24 November 2019 (UTC)
    • His grandfather, Owain ap Gruffydd, is called a Prince of Wales: "The Chronicle of the Princes of Wales records in 1210 that "all the Welsh princes, except Rhys and Owain the sons of Gruffudd son of Rhys..."[13]
    • Not sure of sources, but Stirnet shows Owain (d 1275) without the title "Lord of South Wales".[14]
