Biography
Daughter of Edward and Henrietta (Espenhain) Pohle, immigrants of Germany from present-day Thuringia, who migrated to Pennsylvania in the 1850s. Her father was chiefly a shoemaker, though also held other positions, at one point even operating a saloon in Honesdale. Where her siblings mostly remained in Honesdale, Mary removed to New York for a short time by her marriage to Charles Peterlein, a cousin.
The family moved permanently to Michigan, at first settling in Plainwell in the mid-1890s, before moving again to Grand Rapids by 1900, where her husband operated a business making leather bicycle grips. They resided at 233 Jefferson in 1900 (now Lexington Avenue). The building at 344 Commerce Avenue Southwest once housed this business, renovated in 2017 as apartments.
They were interred at the mausoleum at Graceland Memorial Park.
