The Humes of Polwarth always spelt their surname with a U. This distinguishes them from cadet families.[1]
Alexander Hume is stated in a Retour dated 7th May 1504 to be the son and "the lawful and neirest heir" of Margaret Sinclair, when he received her half share of the lands of Kimmerghame, &c., Regality of Bonkill, held in chief from the Earl of Angus. He is recorded further in a charter dated at Redbraes 5th November 1518.
In "Papers relating to the Nunnery of North Berwick 1523 - 1547" is a lease granted by 'Alison' Home by the permission of God Prioress of the Abbey of the Nunnery of North Berwick, in favour of Alexander Hume of Polwarth, and Patrick Hume his son and apparent heir, of the parsonage of the church of Logie in the diocese of Dunblane; to be held with the teindsheaves, for the space of 19 years from Candlemass, at a yearly rental of ninety merks Scots, payable at Candlemass and Lammas. Dated at North Berwick, 26th September, 1523.[2]
Sir James Balfour Paul writes: this Alexander Hume was on the 18th May 1530 warded within the Castle of Dumbarton at the same time as similar restrictions were placed on the liberty of other Borderers, and on the 6th May 1532 he was fined for not appearing on an assize, possibly because he was close to death.[3]
