He married in Danbury, and immediately left for the army with a company he had raised, when the British destroyed the stores near the coast He was in the Battle of Brandywine and Monmouth, being wounded in the latter. He was also at Valley Forge where Mrs Beebee came on horseback to meet him, not having seen him since the wedding. In 1793 he moved to Solon, NY., and two years later to Pompey, settling three miles east of Pompey Hill. Some years later he went to Onondaga Hill, where he owned and kept the public house near the Court House, and also kept the jail. In 1812 he was custodian of the old arsenal, supplying troops going to the frontier Jasper Hopper was his deputy, and his failure to secure a receipt for supplies made it necessary for his superior to go to Oswego. On his return he was drowned in the Seneca River. Some debtors escaped from the jail while the funeral services were in progress, and the family had to make good the debts.

Research Notes

  1. ) Reasons why Clifford marriage assertion linking the NYC marriage record for Lewis Beebe and Elizabeth Barre [12] is probably incorrect:
    1. ) The 1810 Onondaga Census shows one and one only child for Lewis Beebe; if he was married in 1802 to E. Barre there should be more children.
    2. ) There are two Lewis Beebes enumerated in the 1810 Census, one is in Onondaga and the other in NYC. It is exceedingly more probable that the Lewis Beebe living in NYC in 1810 was the same Lewis Beebe who married Elizabeth Barre in NYC in 1802. Also worth noting is that there was no female in the 1810 NYC Lewis Beebe household, did Elizabeth (Barre) Beebe die in NYC between 1802 and 1810? 1810 New York City Census: United States 1810 Census. Online database. AmericanAncestors.org. New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2015. (Original index: United States Census, 1810. FamilySearch, 2015.) This 1810 Census shows that there are two Lewis Beebes extant in the year 1810, and provides strong substantiation for the idea that the Lewis Beebe the lived in Onondaga County, New York was NOT the husband of Elizabeth Barre, because he was already in Onondaga in 1810, while the Lewis Beebe living in NYC in 1810 was almost certainly the husband of Elizabeth Barre married in 1802. https://www.americanancestors.org/DB1560/rd/22085/157/439070664
    3. ) The 1814 land sale at Fabius NY affirms Sally was the wife of Lewis at Fabius in 1814, and supports the assertion she would have been his wife in the 1810 Fabius Census.
    4. ) The Onondaga Rev War source states that James Beebe, the father of Lewis, was living in Onondaga in 1795, this would also place Lewis in Onondaga in 1795 and make it very unlikely that he went to NYC to marry Ellizabeth Barre at the age of 19 in 1802, only to return to Onondaga prior to 1810 (James L was born in Onondage prior to 1810)
    5. ) There is no evidence that an Elizabeth (Barre) Beebe died and was buried in Onondaga between 1802 and 1814 (date of Lewis and Sally land deal), despite several other related Beebe burials in the area cemeteries during this period.

Hi Randy:

Thank you very much for your information and thoughts.

"Lewis Beebe of the Town of Fabius County of Onondaga State of New-York and Sally his wife" (O:305) can be found in FamilySearch's "United States, New York Land Records, 1630-1975 Onondaga Deeds 1814-1815 vol O-P."

The link is: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-89WK-G3B6?i=953&wc=M7HY-7NL%3A358132901%2C358695501&cc=2078654

I have not found any document showing John "West" Beebe (or surname variations), although many people show it in their Ancestry.com tree.

The 1865 NY State census, De Witt, Onondaga, NY, shows that John W. Bebee, age 36, was born in Madison Co., NY, so it seems likely his father Lewis was living there, too, in 1818-1819.

It seems likely that since his father Capt. James Beebee and sisters Betsey and Sarah were living in 1795 in Pompey, Onondaga, NY, Lewis, at age about 12 years, was also living there:

It's important to either confirm or refute that Sally Beebee who d. 20 Mar 1823 and was bur. in Vischer Ferry Cem., Vischer Ferry, Saratoga Co., NY, was the wife of the Lewis Beebe, of Onondaga County, who m. Desire on 2 Nov 1823.

Hello Ted: After a thorough review of the data, I am fully in agreement with your assertion that Elizabeth Barre was not the wife of this Lewis Beebe. I have summarized the points you made and added a few more in the Research notes section, and will be removing Elizabeth Barre as the first wife of this Lewis. It is quite clear that the Clifford Beebe Genealogy made an error on this one.

On another note, take a look at the find a grave profile for "Infant Beebe" who died at roughly the same time as Sally Beebe at Visher Ferry, again no tombstone, but there is a graveside note that states the infant was a child of Lewis and Sally Beebe. If this came from grave records or a tombstone, then then there is good evidence that Lewis, the father of this child who died in 1823, had to be born sometime prior to about 1800. There are only five Lewis Beebe identities presently in Wikitree with a pre-1800 birthdate and only this Lewis has a wife Sally. Doesn't mean there couldn't be other Lewis Beebes not presently accounted for, but this is actually a good affirmation that the Sally Beebe of Onondaga was the one who died at Visher Ferry.

One more thought, there is a grandchild, son of James Lewis Beebe, named William Wirt, and his middle name may be a surname namesake of his grandmother Sally. Certainly close enough to West to be conflated from script handwriting.

Thank you for the information, profile insight, and source citations; the profile has been significantly improved as a result of your contribution.

Ted: I ran into a second 1810 Census record for a Lewis Beebe in New York City. (it is posted in the research notes) As this means there is a concurrent Lewis Beebe in Onondaga, NY., and NYC, NY. in 1810; this data substantiates your suspicion that the Lewis Beebe of Onondaga was not the husband of Elizabeth Barre of New York City, rather the Lewis Beebe living in NYC in 1810 would have been her husband..

Also it looks like the West surname assertion for Sally came from a guess based on the middle name of son John West Beebe, not a compelling piece of data, but some evidence nevertheless.

Hello Ted; It is clear your comments are based on some reliable documentation and serious research on your part. After reviewing your comments, I spent some time this morning updating the profile and reviewing the change history in order to provide a more informed response to your questions. In the process of updating, I found and added the 1865 NY census you cited as well as the NYC marriage record of Lewis and Elizabeth Barre and the 1840 NY Onondaga Census for Lewis Beebe. I have not been able to find a source for the Indenture in the NY Deed book you cited; this source appears to have some valuable information that needs to be added to the profile, do you have a copy of this or can you provide a link to access this document?

So regarding your questions: 1) Why would Lewis go from Onondaga to NYC to marry Elizabeth Barre? The question assumes that Lewis Beebe was living in Onondaga in 1802, this may or may not be correct. What is known (based on the documents in the profile) is that Lewis was born in western Conn in 1783 and that he was living in Onondaga in 1810. There is nothing in the data to affirm nor preclude him from having lived in or married in NYC in the interim period.

Q 2&3). Regarding Sally West, she was introduced into this Wikitree profile by Joel Taylor in a Dec 2018 profile merge (of which I was not a participant). This marriage appears to be based solely on the unsourced Find a Grave profile (no tombstone photo or any other evidence) of a Sally Beebe in the Vischer Cemetery in Saratoga and the surname West was imported in the merge (with no documentation to support the assertion). So there is presently nothing but hearsay evidence linking this Sally (perhaps West) and Lewis Beebe and without adding some tangible evidence (perhaps your land indenture?). The presently available source data in the related profiles suggests this marriage is probably not correct should be removed from the profile with an explanatory note placed in the research section. As a side note, the FAG profile states that Sally was a consort of Lewis Beebe, which (if I understand correctly) means they may have been married or could have been common law partners.

I would agree that it seems unusual that Lewis of Onondaga would have gone from Fabius, Onondaga in 1810, to Visher Ferry, Saratoga in March of 1823 only to go back to Onondaga to marry Desire in Nov of 1823, but I have seen other instances where people in this period move around a lot more than might be expected. You mentioned a Madison County connection, and I am assuming you are referring to the 1820 Sullivan census for a Lewis Beebe. I think this Lewis Beebe is from a different family--probably this other Lewis Beebe, but it will take some digging to try and confirm or refute this; i.e. a head count analysis of the children in the 1810, 1820 and 1830 census records should reveal if there is compatiblity. (Also worth noting is that, to date, I have found no 1820 census for a Lewis Beebe in Onondaga.)

As a final note, the NYC marriage record to Elizabeth Barre was linked to this Lewis Beebe by Clifford Beebe in his 1991 Beebe Genealogy (an update to Clarence Beebe's original 1904 work) and it has proven to be quite accurate, but the text does not provide source information and it does have some errors.

1) The 1865 NY State Census, Manlius, Onondaga Co., NY, p. 18, shows that Lewis Beebe who m. Desire was m. 2X. This would account for wives Sally and Desire, but not Elizabeth.

2) The indenture of 18 Oct 1814, Onondaga Co., NY, Deed Book O:305 shows Lewis Beebe of Fabius & Sally his wife. 3) George Wells Bartholomew (1885) p. 136 shows that Lewis Beebe m. Desire Bartholomew on 2 Nov 1823.

Questions: 1) Why would Lewis Beebe have gone from Onondaga County to New York City to m. Elizabeth Barre? If he did, that would contradict the 1865 census that stated he was m. 2X, not 3X. 2) What is the source that shows that Lewis Beebe m. Sally West? Was the maiden name West just a genealogist's assumption based on the middle name of son John West Beebe? What was the source of the middle name West? 3) What is the source that shows that Sally Beebee who d. 20 Mar 1823 and was bur. in Vischer Ferry Cem., Vischer Ferry, Saratoga Co., NY, was the wife of the Lewis Beebe, of Onondaga County, who m. Desire on 2 Nov 1823? Why would the family have moved from Onondaga Co. to Madison Co., to Saratoga Co. and back to Onondaga Co.?

Any information or thoughts about any of this would be appreciated. Thank you.
