COL. HALL IN THE ARMY. — The officers of the staff of the late Col. A. S. Hall, in token of their esteem for their Commander, head just previous to his deceased procured a valuable gold watch and chain, which military duties prevented the formal presentation up. Since the death of Col. Hall, the watch has been sent to Mrs. Hall with the following letter:
HEADQ’RS, 2D BRIG., 4TH DIVISION.
14TH ARMY CORPS, IN THE FIELD,
JULY 17, 1863
MRS. CYBELIA HALL, : — As an evidence of appreciation of the military career of Colonel A. S. Hall, and our admiration of his gallantry and patriotism, we, officers of his staff, purchased a watch and chain to be presented to him. Unfortunately he did not live to receive it. — In his death you have lost an appreciating, worthy and devoted husband. We have lost a true and noble hearted friend, and our country has lost an able, energetic and efficient officer. Inasmuch as it has pleased Almighty God to dissolve the ties by which he was bound to us on earth, we mourn with you in irreparable loss, and most sincerely sympathize with you in this deep affliction. Accept at our hands this watch and chain. May it prove a remembrance to keep alive in memory the many daring deeds of his brilliant military career, and may it perpetuate his name, from generation to generation, especially marking that brightest page in the history of his life, where stands recorded the most decided victory of the war, the battle of Milton.
Maj. CHAS. N. FOWLER, Surgeon.
Capt. W. R. TUTTLE, A. A. G.
Lieut. WM. H. OSBORN, A. C. S.
Lieut. H. M. SMITH, A. Q. M.
Lieut. C. W. PAREY, Brig. Insp.
Lieut. S. L. FORTNER.
Lieut. JNO. M. EASTING.
The following is Mrs. Hall‘s reply:
To the Members of Col. A. S. Hall’s Staff:
GENTLEMEN: — in receiving the elegant present intended for my late husband, I fully appreciate the kindness of the act, and the esteem you bore to your late Colonel. This watch and chain will ever serve to remind me of him for whom it was intended, and of its liberal donors. This momento shall be carefully preserved, and will to future generations speak of the patriotism and devotion of both him and you.
I am, very respectfully, yours,
CYBELIA HALL
