Slave Owner

In 1816, the authorities instituted slave registers by district[3], which gives information about who owned any slaves. We can find Christoffel van Zijl, Gideon's son in the Swellendam Slave Register, Ledger Z, Folio 9[4], where he initially registered 3 house slaves in 1816, growing to 7 in 1834 when abolition arrived. Their names are:

Sampson, Juliana, Romana, Daphne, Jephta, Present, Carolus

It is interesting to note the difference between the various brothers van Zijl. The youngest son, Nicolaas Johannes, seems never to have owned slaves, while the only slightly younger Diederik did have a few.
