Biography

Matilda Martha Smith was born on February 16, 1811 in Hempstead, Queens County (now Nassau County), New York, United States.[1] She may have been the daughter of John and Betsy Smith, both born in New York.[2]

She married Kenneth Mackinzy de Vries on February 21, 1825 in New York City, New York County, New York.[3] They had at least four children.

  1. Elizabeth Defries was born in about 1830.
  2. John Smith De Freese was born on August 12, 1832 in Hudson, New York.
  3. Hannah Defries was born in about 1836.
  4. Diana Defries.

She married Elisha Hyatt after about 1839. They had at least one child.

  1. Helen M Hyatt was born on August 25, 1846 in California.[4]

On February 4, 1846, Matilda, husband Elisha, and son John Smith (De Freese) Hyatt sailed to California on the ship Brooklyn, going around Cape Horn. The trip took over six months. They arrived in San Francisco on July 31, 1846.[5][2]

On September 14, 1852, Matilda travelled by wagon train to Utah with the Parley P Pratt Company. She was accompanied by her husband, Elisha Hyatt, and two children, John Smith Hyatt and Helen Hyatt. This was a small company with eleven men, three women, and one child. Then travelled from San Bernardino, California to Utah, arriving on October 18 1852.[6]

In May of 1854, Matilda (age 42) is listed in the Parowan Times newspaper as a resident of the City of Parowan, Iron County, Utah. Also listed is her husband Elisha Hyatt (age 39), daughter Helen Hyatt (age 8), son John Smith Hyatt (age 21), and daughter in law Martha Smith Hyatt (age 20).[7]

On November 20-22, 1857, Matilda travelled by wagon train with the Robert Crow Company from San Bernadina, Californa to Utah, arriving on December 25, 1857. This wagon train was made up of 26 people and 7 wagons. They crossed the Mojave Desert to Las Vegas via the California-Salt Lake Road. The company disbanded at Santa Clara, Utah, with some of the party continuing further north.[8]

The 1860 census shows Matilda (age 50) living in San Francisco 11th district, San Francisco County, California with her husband Alisha Hyatt and daughter Helen Hyatt.[9] The 1870 census shows Matilda (age 60) living in Hempstead, Queens County, New York with her husband Alisha.[10] In 1875, the census shows Matilda (age 64) living in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York with her husband Elisha.[11] In 1880, the census shows Matilda (age 69) living in Brooklyn with her husband Elisha.[12]

Elisha and Matilda are listed on land deeds in Brooklyn on 15 May 1874, and on 18 May 1883 in Kings County, New York.[13][14][15]

Matilda passed away at an age of seventy-five on November 29, 1892 in Merrick, Hempstead, Nassau County, New York.[16][17]

Research Notes

She may still be married and living with her first husband in 1840. The census records show Mckenzie Defriese (age 40 to 50) living with wife (age 30 to 40), and four children. The children are a daughter (age 10 to 15), a son (age 5 to 10), and two daughters (under age 5). This is consistent with their known children.[18]

Her brother might be Richard Smith.
