Edith Kathleen French was born on 18th August 1877 at Woolwich, Kent, England. She was the third surviving daughter and eighth of ten children of Major General Sir George French KCMG and Janet Innes. Her birth was registered in Woolwich in the third quarter of 1877[1]. Edith was raised where her father's military career postings took the family, from England to Queensland, back to England and then to India and to New South Wales. Edith appears to have remained in New South Wales when her parents returned to England in 1900.
Edith married British Army Boer War veteran, Ewen MacLagan, on 29th January 1902 in St Andrew's Cathedral, Sydney, New South Wales. [2]. They had one daughter, Isobel, born in 1903 whilst they were still in Sydney on Ewen's secondment.
From 1910, Ewen was once more seconded to the Australian Army and the family lived in Australia. Following the First World War, with Ewen then a decorated Major General, they returned to Britain.
Edith passed away, aged just 50 years, on 7th July 1928 at Tannadice, Angus, Scotland. [3]
