Biography

Jesse was born in Utah in 1899, the son of Ezra and Louise Chase.

In 1900, the Chase family lived on their farm on15th Street in Ogden, Utah. All members of the household were born in Utah, except as noted. The household included Ezra Chase, 33, born May 1867, a farm laborer, who owned their farm without a mortgage; his wife of ten years, Louise, 29, born in Michigan in March 1871 (father b. MI; mother b. France), who had had six children, four of whom were living; their children, Frank, 8, b. Dec. 892, in school; Margueritte, 6, b. July 1894; Erma, 3, b. May 1897; and Jesse Earl, six months, b. Nov. 1899. Living nearby, possibly on the same property, was Ezra’s brother, James Chase, 28, and his wife and two children.[1]

In 1910, Ezra and his family lived in a house in the rear of his father’s house at 1509 Washington Ave., Ogden, Utah.

In the front house lived Wells Chase, 79, born in New York, a widower, first marriage: 56 years; his two daughters, Jane Cooper, 55, a widow, who had had one child, now deceased; and Charlotte Wood, 44, who had had three children, two of whom were living; her husband of 14 years, Allan F. Wood, 40, b. MA, a butcher; their children, both in school: Charles L. Wood, 11; and Burn N. Wood, 9, b. Colorado; and a grandson of Wells Chase, Wells Cunningham, 14, in school.

In the rear house lived Ezra Chase, 42, a house carpenter; his wife of 19 years, Louisa, 39, b. MI, who had had ten children, eight of whom were living; and their eight children, aged 4 months to 17 years. All in school except for the youngest three. The baby, 4 months of age, was an unnamed daughter. The oldest, Frank, 17, was a house carpenter, and he was in school. The Chase children were : Frank, 17; Marguerite, 15; Irma, 12; Jesse, 10; Dot, 7; Louisa, 5; Ezda, 3; and baby girl, 4 months.[2] [3]

In 1920, the Chase family lived at 309 15th Street, Ogden, Utah. All were born in Utah, except as noted. The household included Ezra Chase, 50, a house carpenter; his wife Louise, 48, born in Michigan; their ten children, Margaret, 25, saleslady in a confectionary store; Erma, 22, saleslady in a florist shop; Jesse E., 20, laborer in a confectionary; Dot, 17, machine girl at a candy company; Louise, 15; Ezda, 12; Jenett, 9; Lee, 8; Eugene, 6; and Junior, 4; also, a grandson, Glen T. Hill, 2. The children aged 8-17 were in school. Living nearby were three other Chase families. [4]

Jesse Earl Chase, son of Ezra Chase and Louise Lee, and Arvilla Jones, daughter of Joseph E. Jones and Vilda Percks, were married on 1 October 1921 in Weber County, Utah.[5]

Jesse Earl Chase was born 11 November 1897 (?) in Ogden, Utah, the son of Ezra and Louise Chase. Jesse served as a Fireman 2nd Class in the US Navy during WWI, aboard the USS Monterey. He enlisted (or was discharged) on 1 June 1918.[6]

The USS Monterey (II) was built in San Francisco, CA in 1889, and launched in 1891. She served during the Spanish-American War, mostly in the Philippines. During WWI, she served in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii as the assigned station ship for Pearl Harbor Naval Station. The Monterey was decommissioned in 1921, sold for scrap in 1922, and was towed to Oakland, CA where she was scrapped. (USS Monterey, Wikipedia)

Jesse served in the US Navy during WWI. He and his wife and daughter are buried in Ogden City Cemetery, Ogden, Utah. [7]
