Biography

All vital stats are based on 5 family trees, all unsourced, but all agree. Four census records 1850-1880 are consistent with a birth in 1800 TN. I cannot find any vital records in birth or death locations online.

I have no primary source data proving that John Allen and Nancy Mattox are the parents of Elizabeth A Allen. However, there is strong circumstantial evidence of them living close together and that Anderson's brother, Eli C McMahan, married Amanda Allen, Elizabeth's younger sister, in Sevier TN in 1832. In the 1830 census, the first census available for Sevier Tn, Anderson is living just 10 doors away from John Allen, age 50-60. In 1810 census for Buncombe NC, Eli McMahan, father to Anderson and Eli C, is found on the same page as John Allen, age 16-25, the right age for John Allen, husband of Nancy Mattox. I have no idea if this is the right John Allen because In 1810 John Allen received a land grant #1701 in Cocke TN for 328 acres on the head of English Creek. But it just so happens that Eli removed to Cocke TN also by 1816 and his last record in Buncombe NC is 24 Aug 1815 where he witnessed Edmond McMahans property sale.

Of the 5 unsourced family trees by such McMahan researchers as Pamala Hudson and JJ Henry (both of whom I found numerous mistakes/ommissions in the McMahan Line), there is a significant family group sheet for John Allen and Nancy Mattox on file at the Sevier TN County Library ^[1] with daughter Elizabeth Allen who married Anderson McMahan 29 Feb 1816, and Millie Allen who married Eli McMahan, no date. (NOTE: 1816 was a leap year and there is no author for this FGS).

Yes, this evidence is not sufficient to declare that the Allens are Elizabeth's parents, but I have multiple DNA matches to John Allen and Nancy Mattox that do not have McMahans in the tree of those matches. Add it all up and I think that John Allen and Nancy Mattox are the parents of Elizabeth, wife of Anderson McMahan. Please email with comments or objections if you know otherwise or object to this.
