Biography

  • This family surname has been reported variously as Greenwalt, Greenwall, Greenwald, Greenwell.
  • Robert was born in 4 Feb1864. He passed away in 21 Jan 1919.
  • James Robert Greenwalt (spelling on KY Death Cert.) was the son of Joseph Greenwald (spelling on wife's widows pension) and Harriett Medlock. James Robert Greenwalt was better known as "Bob".
  • He is said to have been born in Kentucky, but in 1860 his parents lived in Joachim, Jefferson Co Missouri and his father served initially in the Civil War in the Union Army, 31st Missouri Infantry, Co A, enlisting 11 August 1862. Joseph later transferred to the 32nd Missouri Co G. His father is noted in Washington, DC Adjutant General's Office records to have been admitted to the post hospital in St. Louis MO on 19 Dec 1864. Bob's mother Harriett Medlock was raised in Jefferson County, Missouri (she is documented there on the 1850 census).
  • James R. Greenwall first shows up with his parents in Ballard Co KY on the 1870 census. That census states he was born in Illinois. Also on his 1880 census taken at Columbus, Hickman Co KY he stated he was born in Illinois. The information on Bob's Kentucky Death Certificate was given by his 2nd wife, Elizabeth J. "Lizzie" Clark. My conclusion is that I see no logical reason to not believe that James Robert "Bob" Greenwalt was born in either Missouri or Illinois instead of Kentucky as stated on his death certificate. Illinois is just a bridge across the Mississippi River from Missouri.
  • Robert Greenwald (spelling on marriage record) married Mattie Harp on 16 Jun 1889 in Hickman Co KY. Two children followed in short order. Daughter, Tena Agatha in February 1890 and son Harry in November 1892, both at Columbus, Hickman Co KY. Bob's wife Martha "Mattie/Mittie" Harp died sometime after the birth of son Harry and when Bob remarried on 20 April 1894 in Carlisle Co KY. Crump-517 has auDNA matches to descendants of Tena's from both her 1st and 2nd marriages scoring at 267 cM across 11 segments, 207 cM across 10 segments, 199 cM across 9 segments, 130 cM across 7 segments (all from Ancestry.com).
  • On 20 April 1894 in Carlisle Co KY Bob married 17 year old Elizabeth J. "Eliza" Clark. They had 7 children: Thelma, Mary Etta, Lydia Hazel, Marjorie Louise, Bernice, Ethel Lohema, and Ira William Greenwalt. Crump-517 has auDNA match of 209 cM across 9 segments and 181 cM across 9 segments (all via Ancestry.com) with descendants of Bob's daughter Bernice Greenwalt.
  • Robert "Bob" Greenwalt died on 21 January 1919 of influenza and lobar pneumonia and is buried in Columbus, Kentucky, cemetery unknown.
  • Bob's 2nd wife Elizabeth J. "Eliza" Clark Greenwalt lived for approximately 38 years after the death of her husband. She is buried with her daughter Mary Etta Dunn at the Beechwood Cemetery in Mounds, Illinois.
