Biography

Daniel, son of Josiah and Mehitable Poland of Essex, Massachusetts, was born in Essex about 29 June 1805 (estimated from age declared at death)[1]

Daniel Poland and Susan Burnham, both of Essex, Massachusetts, were married in Essex on 29 May 1829. [2] 5] They lived in Essex, Massachusetts,[3] and had one son, Daniel Poland jr (1830-1904).

His first wife died of consumption in 1835, and Daniel married her younger sister: Daniel Poland and Lucy A. Burnham, both of Essex, marriage 27 Mar 1836.[4] The couple had a daughter, Susan B Poland (1837-1866).

His second wife died in 1838, and Daniel remarried: Daniel Poland and Ruth Andrews, marriage 12 Nov 1839.[5] The couple lived in Essex : POLAND Daniel (age 44, born MA, shipwright, real estate $250), Ruth (age 50, wife), Daniel jr. (20), Susan B (13), Gardner (9); Essex, Essex, Mass.[6]

His third wife died in 1851, and Daniel married her younger sister: Daniel Poland (shipwright, age 47, b. Essex, res. Essex, son of Josiah Poland, 4th marriage) and Philenia Guppy (age 43, res. Essex, born in Essex, daughter of Solomon Andrews, 2nd marriage), marriage 01 Sep 1852 at Hamilton, Massachusetts.[7] They lived in Essex, Massachusetts, until his death. [8] [9]

His will, dated 28 January 1881, names wife Philemina, his son Daniel Poland of Gloucester; grandsons Arthur L Lufkin & Gardner M Poland and grand-daughter Ruthey Poland of Essex (Ruth Augusta (Poland) Ireland).[10]

Daniel Poland, ship carpenter, married, died 29 May 1881 in Essex by "cessification of heart" at age 75 y 11 m, born in Essex, son of Josiah and Mehitable Poland, also born in Essex. [11] He was buried at Spring Street Cemetery, Essex, Massachusetts. Next to his grave there is a headstone commemorating his first three wives: "Susan Poland: died Apr 8, 1835 Æ 30 yrs / Lucy A. Poland: died Feb 26, 1838 Æ 35 yrs / Ruth Poland: died Sept 20, 1851 Æ 52 yrs".[12]
