Biography

Sarah was born in 1847 to Zachariah John Ellison and Mary Henley Ellison. For some reason, her father did not live with her mother, at least at the time census records were taken. In the 1850 Census and the 1860 Census records Zachariah, though still living, was not listed as head of the house. Mary seemed to be running the household. On December 15, 1863 Sarah married Michael Dunn. Sarah and Michael stood before Peter Wiley, the Justice of the Peace in Hawkerville about eight miles East of Decherd. Her mother, Mary Henley Ellison, and brother were there as witnesses, as she said “I do.” After Michael was severely wounded in the Battle of New Hope Church, north of Atlanta, Sarah moved to her husband's farm in Potter County, Pennsylvania and waited for his return from the hospital.

Michael Dunn was discharged from the hospital in New York on August 17, 1865, and he returned to northern Pennsylvania, to Potter County and to Sarah, who would care for him the rest of his life.

Family tradition says Sarah was waiting for Michael at the train station in Shongo with a pair of horses and a wagon. She discovered he'd made the trip from New York city riding in a barrel stuffed with cotton. With help, she got him loaded into the wagon, and turned the team south, for the 12 mile journey home.

Once Michael began getting his pension, he had gone to Coudersport and on February 19, 1866, renounced "all allegiance and fidelity" to the Queen of Great Britain, and became an American citizen.

The following June, Sarah gave birth to a son: George William. Five more children followed. Stanton in 1869, Margaret in 1872, Minnie in 1873, Glencora in 1875 and Edith May in 1876.

Michael finally succumbed to his wounds and died October 23, 1877. Like her mother, Sarah was left to run the household. The strain was too much and for a time she was forced to place some of her children in an orphanage, Minnie Dunn was one of those children.
