Biography

He was born about 1735 in King William, King William County, Virginia, USA.

George Lawson married about 1755 in Charlotte County, Virginia, USA to a Jean (of unknown maiden surname) and they had 9 known children.

George Lawson died in December 1786 at his home in Cornwall Parish, Charlotte County, Virginia, USA and was buried at Randolph, Charlotte County, Virginia, USA. ^[1]

On 01 Jan 1787 his last Will was submitted to the probate court in Charlotte County, Virginia and mentioned ... ^[2]

Joshua was a minor when his father's will was probated and chose William Morton, appraiser of George's estate, as his guardian. ^[2]

Sarah married on 28 Mar 1787 at Charlotte County to Clement Sullivant. ^[3]

Five of his sons served in the American Revolutionary War - Nathan, James, John, Joshua and Benjamin Lawson. Son, James (b: c1760) died on 07 Sep 1781 at the Battle of Eutaw Springs in South Carolina during that war.

His sons, George and Benjamin remained in Cornwall Parish, Charlotte County, Virginia, USA.

His sons, Nathan, John Zachariah, and Joshua settled their families in Washington County, Kentucky between 1797 and 1802.

His wife Jean may have been related to Nathan Buckley, a neighbor of George's family in 1786. Jean traveled to Washington County, Kentucky, USA with her family. She sold her dower right to the family farm to her son, Joshua in 1802. She sold him her right to 78 acres of land (1/3) of the plantation. Joshua sold the same land in 1802 to Nathan Buckley on 19 Aug 1802. Jean was a good mother, wife, grandmother and good friend to all her neighbors. She died between 1802-1818 in Kentucky, USA.

Research Notes

• There is a record for a Captain G. W. Lawson who served in Colonel Richard Parker's 1st Virginia Regiment in the service of the United States in April 1779; ^[4] but it is not known if that was this George Lawson. No DAR Ancestor record could be found for a George Lawson.

• George appeared in the 1769 tithe list for Joseph William's District of Lunenburg County and was assessed for one white male over 16 years and taxes on 100 acres. ^[2] Charlotte County was formed in 1764 from the westernmost portion of Lunenburg County.

From Robert Williams of the Parish of Cornwall and Charlotte County, to Alexander Brown of same, for 26 pounds, all that tract of about 75 acres of land in the Parish of Cornwall and Charlotte County on the branches of Wallace Creek and bounded by George Lawson, John Bailey and Robert Williams. Signed Robert Williams. Witness Francis Petty. Mary, the wife of Robert Williams, relinquished her right of dower. Recorded 5 October 1773.

From Drury Stith of St. Andrew’s Parish and Brunswick County, to George Lawson of the Parish of Cornwall and Charlotte County, for 10 pounds, all that tract of about 190 acres of land in the Parish of Cornwall and Charlotte County on the East Waters of Wallace Creek and bounded by Richard Crew’s line, William Brunfield’s line, to a pine on the Court House Road, thence with the said Road along William Williams’ line, to Fegan’s line, to Alexander Brown’s line. Signed Drury Stith S. S. Witnesses James Love, John Ingram, Charles Clayton and Nathan (X) Lawson. Recorded three times, at a Court held 1 August 1774, 3 July 1775 and 2 October 1775.

  • Aug 1780: Charlotte County, Virginia, Order Book 4, 1774-1780, page 224, June Court 1780 – Joel Watkins Gentleman is appointed to furnish George Lawson a poor person in this county, who has two sons as soldiers in the Continental Army, with two barrels of corn for his present support and it is ordered that the said Watkins’ be allowed for the same.
  • 06 Nov 1780: Charlotte County, Virginia, Order Book 5, 1780-1784, page 3, 1 November Court 1780 – William Morton, Gentleman is appointed to furnish George Lawson a poor person in this County who has six in family and hath two sons as soldiers in the Continental Army, with four barrels corn and three hundred pounds of pork for their support for one year and it is ordered that the said Morton be allowed for the same.
