He was the son of William Schofield and Hannah Gregson (possibly Greyson).

He married first Mary Winterbottom (possibly Broadbent) in 1853. They had three children.

He married second Josephine Peterson on May 18, 1874 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah Territory, United States. They had five children.
