On 18th April 1884 the young couple embarked aboard Crown of Arragon at Glasgow and migrated to the Colony of Queensland (Australia), arriving Brisbane 1st July 1884.[2] In their new homeland they had two sons and five daughters:

  1. Annie Isabella (1889-1966), married Thomas Chapman.
  2. Jessie (1891-1968), married Daniel Hogg.
  3. Emily Jane (1892-92), infant mortality.
  4. Alexander Murdo (1893-1963), married Elizabeth Maudsley.
  5. George Leighton (1896-1978), married Lavinia Jory; was awarded the Military Medal in WWI.
  6. Emily Jane (1899-1970), married Dennis Connellan.
  7. Christina Elizabeth (1901-80), married James Green.

They lived at Brisbane until 1895, then moved to the beautiful rural village of Pinbarren Siding (re-named Pomona in1900 (after the Roman goddess of fruit and orchards), between the Sunshine Coast and Gympie, and settled.

Annie passed away, about 50 years of age, on 26th May 1914 at Pomona.[3] She was survived by her husband and six of her seven children.

Historical setting

Raised her family during the depression of the 1890s and witnessed the federation of the six British Colonies into the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901, but mercifully saved from seeing the effects of the dreadful carnage of The Great War 1914-18. Was a subject of three monarchs, Queen Victoria and Kings Edward VII and George V. The South Pole was reached, and gold was discovered at Gympie, just 40 kms to the north of Pomona.
