Biography

He passed away in 1796.

Gaulis had a liaison with Mary Jane Vial starting in 1794. He was a merchant associated with the firm of David Duveluz & Co in London, and his sister was Albertina Marianna Gaulis who married the 17th Baron Clinton.

Sources

After Gaulis' death, Mary Jane declared he was the father of her daughter, Clara. However, this was impossible because Clara was born over a year after Gaulis' death. It does appear that Clara believed him to be her father. There is no evidence that Gaulis used the surname Clairmont in his lifetime, however, Mary Jane used the surname as an alias when representing herself as his widow and the mother of his 'daughter'. http://www.davel.vd.ch/archivplansuche.aspx?ID=868685
