Alfred was born in 1858. He was the son of Thomas Roebuck and Eliza Abbott.[1]
Alfred lived with his parents and siblings in Camberwell, St Giles, London, Surrey, England. His father was a Lace Warehouseman.
In the Census Dated 1881 he was living with his family in Croxted Rd, Rutland, Camberwell, London,Surrey, England. Aged 21 and single.
Occupation: Warehouseman
Alfred made the decision to emigrate from England to New Zealand. They departed London on 16 March 1886 on the barque the Akaroa and were on the boat heading for New Zealand when Mt Tarawera erupted killing many people and burying the Pink and White Terraces. They arrived shortly afterwards in Auckland on 25 June 1886.[2]
Also on the ship were cousins Albert Burwell, Edward Mitchell and Robert Mitchell. It is not known if they met on the ship, or were known to each other back in England.
After their arrival in Auckland Alf and Robert "Harry" Mitchell went ashore to "look for a house or somewhere to go into", and came across a friend of a friend's who had engaged a board and lodging for them at 18/- a week, which they could not refuse, although they thought the price steep. The house was in the suburb of Parnell and "very prettily situated but up hill nearly all the way" and it tired their legs walking from the docks. They stayed there two weeks and were very comfortable.
Alf subsequently got a good job in wholesale drapery.
Sadly he passed away in 1887 at the age of 29, unmarried. Cause of Death: Phthisis (pulmonary tuberculosis).[3]
