Biography

Flag of Essex (historic flag)
Ethel (Turner) Schubert was born in Grays Thurrock, Essex, England.

In the 1881 Census, Ethel is listed as being three years old and residing in Spooners Cottages, Grays Thurrock, Essex, England. Her birth at Grays, Thurrock is corroborated by a postcard sent from Thomas and Ruth Adams to their son Robert T Adams saying "Thought you would like this view of Grandma's birthplace." On the card is a photo of High Street, Grays. On a later census Ethel will have listed immigrating to the U.S. in 1892.

Ethel immigrated from England to New York with her parents and three of her sisters. They sailed on the ship Wyoming from Liverpool and entered the USA at Ellis Island on 26 Sep 1892. Their residence was noted as Lancashire. Ethel was 11 years old. Her oldest siblings Adelia and Harry are not seen on the ship log, so must have immigrated at a different date. They all eventually ended up in Olean, New York. [1]

Ethel married Joseph Thomas Adams in Maine in 1899 and had children Thomas and Grace with him. Her family story of early married life is visible on her first husband Joseph's profile. After they divorced, Ethel went on to have a long full life. She had a second husband, Fred Schubert, and two additional children, Glenn and Ethel, all residing in Olean, New York. Fred died when the children were young. The family tradition is that when his young daughter was ill with the flu, he prayed over her crib for him to be taken in her place. He passed within days, leaving his widow to raise their four children (two his, and two from her first marriage).

In the 1920 Census she is double counted. In one count she is with Frederick Schubert in New York City residing with his parents. [2]In another count Ethel was living on Rock City Road in Olean. Her daughter Grace was 14 years old and another 14 year old lived two doors down; her name was Ruth Shoff. In 1923 Ruth will marry Grace's brother Tom and become Ethel's daughter-in-law.

Ethel is buried in Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Olean next to her daughter, Grace. On her tombstone Ethel's birth is listed as 1882, but in other records she lists 1880, and the Grays Thurrock Census estimates her birth years to be 1878. Maybe boarder crossings with family were easier if you seemed a little younger. There was a family story that she and Joseph Adams had eloped and married very young, but it's hard to know how old they really were and certainly Joseph's family was in Maine at the time.
