In the Sierra Nevada they found and buried remains of the Donner Party. At the Sweetwater River they encountered the westward bound Charles C. Rich Company of Mormon Pioneers, some of whom were Sylvester's relatives. According to Sylvester's Biographical Sketch, written by Adelia B. Cox (a grand-niece, who was an eye witness), at the Sweetwater, Slyvester was released from the service and "turned his face Westward once more with O. [Orival] S. Cox [and] arrived in Salt Lake valley Oct. 2nd, 1847."
