Cuff Condol, Jr. was born in 1757[1].
"There are at least three last names that are associated with Cuff. The reason that I use Condol in the "Last Name at Birth" is because in all of his descendants' lines that I have traced the name stays as Condol. This is not to say that there are not descendants that chose to use one of the other spellings, I just haven't dug into those lines as closely as I have my own yet." (author unknown)
Cuff Condol (also Congdon or Condal[2]) was of Native American descent, likely Nehantic, and was enslaved in his youth.[3]
Cuff was held as a slave by Capt. Stephen Smith of Lyme, Connecticut, a professional soldier, who probably took Cuff with him during the Revolutionary War.
On March 27, 1769, an ad was posted in the Newport Mercury by John Congdon for a runaway slave, with a reward of ten dollars, which was still running as of August 14, 1769. [4]
"Cuff Condol was purchased from Smith on 28 Jun 1787 by Daniel Wright, Sarah Cyrus, and Joseph Pumham. Curiously enough, his purchasers were all Native American or related persons. They resided on the Nehantic (Niantic), Gungy Tract, or formerly Indian hunting lands. While a connection by parentage or birth has not been found, one is expected to appear with further research." The people that purchased him likely were purchasing a relative out of slavery.
"Cuff was made a free man when he repaid his purchasers on 7 Oct 1790." [5] He was identified in the manumission document as "negro."
In his memoir, Joseph Caples lists daughters Melinda, Fanny, and Abigail and says "there may be more." He then lists six sons: Samuel, Joseph, William, John, Nathan, and Daniel, his grandfather.
He passed away between 21 April 1814 (when he signed a deed) and 19 May 1814 (when his estate entered probate), filed as Case Number 1459, Item Probate Packets, Comstock, Daniel-Copp, C, 1675-1850.[8] [1].
In the inventory of his estate, he is referred to as "Cuff Condal, late of Lyme".
