Research Notes

Courtesy of Nancy Bogard Gardner: An explanation of why Elizabeth Fortney is the more likely spouse of Jesse Bogard - 1. 1798 tax listing for Whitley Twp Greene Co Pa lists Cornelius Bogard and John Fortney in proximity and in Land Grant Applications John Fortney has land north of Cornelius. 2. Census records from 1800 indicate that John Fortney indicates 3 females from the ages of 10-15 yr. Jesse Bogard would have taken a bride from that area and there are no Virden’s present. 3. In census records from 1810 in Monongalia Co VA list John Fortney with only 2 females ages 10-15 yr. 4. Said John Fortney is also mentioned in the will dispute for William “Indian Billy Galloway Ice” last Will and Testament in Monongalia Co VA where “old man Bogard’s” name is mentioned twice. 5. Isaac Ice married Mary Fortney. 6. DNA evidence through 23 and Me, My Heritage, Ancestry and Ged Match indicate that a “S. Fortney and 2 other Fortney men” that are My Heritage and Ancestry members, are a triangulation match with Jesse Bogard’s descendants at the 4th cousin level. 7. “S. Fortney” is also a triangulation match at 4th cousin match for Isaac Ice and Mary Fortney through my connection to the Kimble’s through Jesse M. Bogard and Mary Palmer. 8. Jesse’s wife may be “Elizabeth Sara” Fortney. As “E” is indicated on Jesse M. Bogard’s 2nd marriage application, and Sara is indicated on Isaac Bogard’s death certificate.

In 1776, the District of West Augusta was divided into three counties: Ohio County, Monongalia County, and Yohogania County. Ohio County encompassed most of the western region of the district bordering the Ohio River, including parts of what are now Washington and Greene Counties in Pennsylvania. Monongalia County encompassed much of what is now north-central West Virginia, and parts of what are now Washington, Greene and Fayette Counties in Pennsylvania. Yohogania County consisted of much of what is now southwestern Pennsylvania, including all of what is now Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, parts of the present counties of Washington, Fayette, Allegheny, and Beaver, and the counties of Hancock County, West Virginia and the northern part of Brooke County, West Virginia.[2]

I made a correction to this original doc, it should read "5th cousin level", not the 4th. We would share a 4th Grand father. Thanks George.
