Biography

Garford was born in 1900 in Hanover, Massachusetts, the son of Oscar and Lina (Pool) Pinson.[1] He lived with his parents in Abington, Massachusetts in 1910.[2] The family moved to Boston before 1917 when Garford registered for the draft, showing he was a fur importer, living with his mother.[3]

He married 8 times, with 7 likely divorces.

First marriage: In 1919, he married Marion Gertrude Randall.[4] They had one daughter Ruth Louise in 1919.[5] The couple lived with the Randall family in Boston in 1920 with Garford working as a machinist.[6] They likely divorced before 1924 when Marion remarried and changed Ruth's surname to Heumann, Marion's second husband's name.

Second marriage: Garford married May Swift, in May 1925, in Michigan, both stating falsely this was their first marriage.[7] She had 2 previous marriages, both ended in divorce. This marriage only lasted a few years, again ending in divorce.

Third marriage: Garford married Bessie (last name unknown) in June 1928. They were divorced about March 1929 in Munster, Indiana, after he filed a complaint alleging she menaced him with a gun. [8]

Fourth marriage: Garford married Beatrice May Sarah Parker in February 1930 in Cook County, Illinois. She had previously divorced from Harold Herbert Skelton and had a daughter Natalie Skelton. [9]

Garford (known as George) and Beatrice lived in 1930 in Chicago, Illinois, with Natalie.[10] They had a son, David Ellsworth Pinson born in Chicago that year.[11]

in 1935, Garford was arrested in Chicago, Illinois, after a restaurant he owned was damaged by fire.[12]

Garford and Beatrice likely divorced before 1939 when Garford remarried.

Fifth marriage: he married Marguerita Voeltner Giese 27 March 1939. They both stated this was their second marriage. He used the name George Pinson, but the record shows the same parents and birthplace for Garford.[13]

Likely the marriage to Marguerita lasted less than a year, as Garford may have lived in Melrose, Massachusetts, in 1940, where he was shown as a single lodger, George Pinson. [14]

Next it appears Garford (George) did some traveling. He worked as a crew member and "wiper" on the SS John Rutledge, returning to NY from Brazil in 1943.[15] He arrived in New Orleans, Louisiana, in May 1944, from Calcutta, India.[16]

Sixth marriage: About 1944, Garford married widow France Cornelia Thoma Forna, as shown in voter registration records in Los Angeles, California. The couple lived at 215 N Plymouth. This marriage was also brief, lasting perhaps a year and Frances resumed her previous married name, Forna, before 1950.[17]

Seventh marriage: in January 1945, Garford married Vere Marie (Johnson) Stults in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.[18] She was widowed the year before and had a four year old daughter. This marriage ended in divorce before March 1949 when Vere remarried.

In July 1952, G.E. Pinson, operating under the name of "Bond Company," lost a lawsuit and appeal against Odom, operating as "Merkel Telephone Company to recover on a contract and check, based on Pinson's promise to secure Odom a loan. Pinson was denied his claim for $500.[19]

He was mentioned in another legal case, this time on appeal before the Colorado Supreme Court in 1957, referred to as G. E. Pinson, president, director and employee of Ellsworth-Bond & Company, Inc., of 5019 East Colfax, Denver, Colorado. The suit alleged Pinson "appropriated unto himself and stole away from defendant corporation its property consisting of one 1954 Lincoln sedan of the reasonable value at the time of said removal of the sum of $2,500." Evidence showed the Lincoln was purchased by Bond & Company (of which Pinson was also President) and the original certificate of title issued to Bond & Company of 10525 Montview Blvd., Denver, Colorado. On June 25, 1954 Bond & Co. by G. E. Pinson assigned the title to this Lincoln to Garford E. Pinson. The court could not determine if Ellsworth-Bond & Company, Inc. was the same legal entity as Bond & Company. The case also showed that Pinson, President and employee of Ellsworth-Bond & Company, packed his bags in the Lincoln and with the knowledge and consent of the company started for Florida on Company business where he remained. [20] The outcome of this trial is not known.

Eighth marriage: His final marriage came in 1957, when Garford married Mae Levin Sachs in Nevada. [21] She had been a widow living in Baltimore for 13 years. It is not known where the couple resided after the marriage, but possibly they met in Florida.

in January 1960, Garford was held in Arizona on charges of operating an advance fee loan business, using the name "the Kon-Tax Company." He waived a hearing and was held on $5,000 bail.[22] The next month, he was sentenced to five years for mail fraud with his criminal record showing auto larceny, arson, and obtaining money by false pretenses.[23]

Garford died in September 1964 and he was buried in Oheb Shalom Congregation Cemtetery, Baltimore. [24] [25] His widow Mae (Levin) Pinson lived in Baltimore until her death in 1980.[26] [27]
