Biography

Gwgan ap Gwgan was born about 1105. His father, Gwgan Blaidd Gwyrdd (the green wolf), was born about 1075.[1]

Gwgan's son Cadifor (Cydifor) was born about 1145. Gwgan's grandson Gruffudd Gŵyr (b c1175) married Catryn (b c1190), daughter of Sir Elidyr and his wife Sissely.[1][2]

Research Notes

Son "Gwallter", also estimated to have been born c1145,[3] is not mentioned in Wolcott's article[1] but this Gwgan ap Gwgan provides a missing generation that allows for Gwallter's grandson Walter to be living in 1298.[4]

  2. Wolcott's analysis summized that a generation was missing from Bartrum's charts ("Cydifor ap Gwgon ap Bleddyn"), which he later identified: "(a) We suspect the missing generation was either another Gwgan or another Cadifor, omitted from pedigrees by scribes who thought it was a duplication NOTE: Subsequent research indicates the son of Bleddyn was called Gwgan Blaidd Gwyrdd (the green wolf) and his son was Gwgan ap Gwgan born c. 1105" (#Wolcott)

If Darrell is right and extra generation is warranted, brothers listed may be in fact sons. Which Gwrgan/Gwgan married Gwenlllian verch Philip Gwys?
Wolcott's article charts the latter Gwgan (son of Gwgan Blaidd Gwyrdd ap Bleddyn) as the husband of Gwenllian, daughter of Philip Gwys (see Chart 2 in the article). She's attached to the older Ggwgan, son of Bleddyn, in WikiTree (as of this date). Considering her profile has her born in 1109, I'd say she should be moved to be wife of this profile, not his father's: Gwenllian ferch Philip (1109-)

Bartrum has just the one Gwgan (spelled Gwgon), who is both son of Bleddyn and father of Gwallter (as Bartrum spells it), so that's no help. And, like Bartrum's chart, the image attached to Philip Gwys's profile* also has just one Gwgan (that chart also shows their son, "Sir Walter Wgan"). A Genealogie Online tree has her attached to both Gwgans.

Another Wolcott article - "Einion ap Llywarch of Carmarthenshire" - shows Gwgan ap Bleddyn did have a son named Cadifor:

"The above Gronwy [c1130] ap Einion also married Gwladys (c. 1145) ferch Cadifor (c. 1115) ap Gwgan (c. 1075) ap Bleddyn (c. 1045) ap Maenyrch[12]"

"[12] Sir Thomas Phillips (ed)"Glamorganshire Pedigrees" (1845), p 16"

It also shows a later Cadifor as son of a missing generation (either Gwgan or another Cadifor) - edit - chart copied in fine but upon saving lost all spacing/line breaks, so I deleted it. See the Wolcott article, the chart with a "Cadifor 1140" as son of "x (a)", which is son of "Gwgan 1075" ap "Bleddyn 1045"

The profile attached as son of Gwgan ap Bleddyn is Cadifor ap Gwgan (abt.1125-), as of this date.
