Biography

His father was on the tax list of Hoosick, New York in 1779. A child gives father's birthplace as Vermont in 1880 census. He likely was born near the New York/Vermont border.

By the census of 1800, Francis is married with a young daughter and wife living in Springfield, Otsego County, New York. He is enumerated as Francis Bennet Jr. (one t was used in Bennett in the early years in Otsego Co.) He has not been located in the 1810 census. By 1820 he is in Norwich, Chenango county, New York. 2 males under 10; 3 males 10-15; 1 male 16-25; 2 males 45 and older; 3 females under 10; 1 female 10-15 and 1 female 26-44. He purchases land in Chenango County, part of lot 41; 1 May 1824 adjacent to land owned by his father. (Book FF p 54) In 1827 he purchases his brothers Isiah and Williams interest in the house, land and grist mill owned by their late father. (Book KK p. 95) On June 29, 1827 Francis and Jerusha sell lot 41 to James Anderson in Norwich. Book LL p. 217. On 10 November 1828 Francis obtained a mortgage on the Norwich land from James Anderson. Book K page 108. By the census of 1830, his family lives in the town of Greene, Chenango County, NY. 1 male under 5; 1 male 5-10 1 male 15-20; 1 male 50-60;2 females 10-15; 1 female 15-20; 1 female 40-50. Next door is his son Daniel. (1 male 20-30;1 female 20-30). On June 16, 1831 Francis purchases land in the town of Edwards, St. Lawrence County, NY. (Book 15 p. 202) On 9 September 1834 Francis and Jerusha sell this land in Edwards to their son Daniel. The census of 1840 finds Francis and family in Diana, Lewis County, New York. 1 male 10-14 1 male 15-19; 1 male 70-79; 1 female 50-59; 3 persons employed in agriculture. 2 persons older than 20 who cannot read or write. 2 persons under 20. Francis dies in Diana Feb 1, 1849.
