Adam was born in 1835. He was the son of Jared Nimocks and Nancy Johnston.
He was raised and grew up in Massena, New York and farmed in the area till he was 26 years old.
In 1861 Adam was living in Potsdam, New York. In September of the same year, the 92nd Regiment of the New York Infantry was organized. Adam enlisted in the Regiment on 1 October and by 31 October, he was a Private in Company A, 92nd Regiment of the New York Infantry. [1]
The Regiment organised and trained and was officially mustered in on January 1, 1862 for three-years service. They continued training and on March 5, 1862 the Regiment was ordered to Washington, DC. Although there are no known records showing which battles Adam participated in, the Regiment was ordered to the Peninsula Campaign and the Siege of Yorktown (1862).
The Regiment also participated in the Battle of Williamsburg, the Battle of Seven Pines, the Battle of White Oak Swamp, and the Battle of Malvern Hill among others while Adam was a member of the Regiment.
Adam rose in rank as time went on and ultimately attained the rank of Sergeant. He mustered out of the army 11 Jun 1863.[2]
After military service, he returned home to his farm and when the war was over, he married Elvira England on 4 Jul 1865. Although the marriage records have not been available, family lore says the were married in Ogdensburg, St. Lawrence, New York. They had six of their seven children by the 1880 Census.[3] Their last child was born in 1883.
The same year that their last child was born, homesteading in Iowa was becoming a dream come true. Talk about the fertile land in Western Iowa and the railroads moving crops to market helped seal the family's decision. They loaded up all they had and moved to Ida County, Iowa along with Adam's older sister, Sarah. In 1894, they moved into town at Ida Grove. It was here that Adam would spend the rest of his days farming.
The old Civil War veteran passed away in 1922 at the age of 87.[4]
