Biography

Curtis King was the son of Richard King (abt.1665-abt.1704) and Anne (Custis) King (bef.1675-abt.1713) aka Curtis. He was born in Gosport, Hampshire. ^[1]

Marriage

Curtis King married Mary Colebrooke, the widow of Arthur Colebrook and a daughter of Benjamin Barnett RN and his wife, Mary Willin, on 25 September 1729 at St Thomas, Portsmouth (now the city's cathedral). ^[2]

Mary (Barnett) King (bef.1702-) was born in 1702 and died in 1744. ^[3] Mary had previously married in 1718, in St Thomas’ Portsmouth, to an Arthur Colebrooke. ^[4]

Mary Barnett’s father was lost at sea in November 1703 when HMS Stirling Castle foundered in a storm on the Goodwin Sands (offshore of Deal, Kent). Mary was the sister of Commodore Curtis Barnett, RN. ^{[5] [6]}

Curtis and Mary had six children: ^[7]:

1. Admiral Sir Richard King (1730-1806) MP, Colonial Governor and 1st Baronet, described as third, but only surviving son; born in Gosport, Hampshire on 10 August ^[8] and baptised in Holy Trinity Church there 27 August 1730; ^{[9] [10]}
2. Curtis King (bef.1735-) (Jr.) Baptised Holy Trinity, Gosport. ^[11] unmarried and died in 1754 in Madagascar;
3. Mary (King) Orton (bef.1737-1806) - who married Thomas Orton MD (abt.1730-1797). She was baptised Holy Trinity, Gosport in 1737; ^{[12] [13][14]}
4. Elizabeth King (bef.1738-) (died without issue) Bap. Holy Trinity, Gosport ^[15];
5. Arnold King (bef.1740-) baptised 23 February 1740 at Holy Trinity Church, Gosport, Hampshire;

Life Story

Curtis King was in the Royal Navy, he commanded HMS Berwick and was then made Master of HMS Torbay (80 guns, a large warship). ^[17] Curtis was promoted to Lieutenant, RN in 1740. He captained HMS Blenheim from 1740 to 1742, he was fourth Lieutenant on HMS Sandwich, and then fifth Lieutenant on HMS Berwick from 1742-43. Curtis served as Master Attendant at Plymouth Dockyard 1743 to 1744. ^[18] He became Master-Attendant at Woolwich Dockyard from 1744 to 1745. ^[19](A Master Attendant ran the dockyard overseeing moorings, the state of the ships, and refit programs)

Death

Curtis King died on 1 May 1745 in Woolwich, London. ^[20][21] (Some sources say 5 May)

Curtis was buried in Bromley, Kent, - the record says on 9 April 1745 - the Archive record states 1 May (unless it is reporting on that date that he had previously died?) ^[22]
