Biography

William was born in 1837. He was the son of Rhodes Raines and Sarah Kennedy. He passed away in 1911.

In finding related ancestors with the surname of "Raines", I have come across variations in spellings on the available records. Many records record the surname as "Rains", though many also record it as "Raines". In order to remain consistent within WikiTree, I have elected to record all as "Raines", but to also always list "Rains" as "other last name". Familysearch.org family tree tends to favor the "Rains" spelling. These variations may be due to transliteration errors, recording errors, or other reasons as yet undiscovered.

In the 1850 census for Wayne County, KY, Salley Rains is enumerated as age 39, residing in the household with Rhodes G Rains (her husband - age 39), and their children Emberson (sic) (age 14), Levi (13), Richardson (11), Nancy (9), A M (daughter age 7), Hannah (4), and Rhodes G (age 1).

In the 1860 census for Wayne County, KY, adults "Rodes G Rains" (sic) and "Sarah Rains" are both listed as age 48, with Sarah's birthplace noted as Virginia. Their children that are recorded here (all last name "Rains") are Emerson (age 23), Richardson (21), Nancy (18), Asenatha (16), Hanah (sic) (14), Rodes G (sic) (Jr) (age 9), and Evaline (age 3).

By the time of the 1870 census, William Emerson Raines married Malinda York (married 1863). They are enumerated in this census in the Slickford District of Wayne County, KY. They are listed as Emerson Rains (age 31) and Malinda Rains (age 27), and their children Thursa (age 6), Mary J (age 4), and Grant (age 1).

In the 1880 census for Slickford, Wayne County, KY, "Emberson Rains" (sic), age 44, is married to Nancy Ellen M (Morgan) Rains (age 22). On the census record, Emery's children by Malinda are listed as stepchildren; at this census, Emery and Nancy had two children recorded. Emery's children with Malinda are all are recorded with the last name "Rains", as follows: Sarah (age 14), Mary J (age 12), Grant (age 9), Matilda (age 8), Silus (sic) (age 6), and Pall (sic) (age 5). Emery's children with Nancy, also recorded as "Rains", are James R (age 3), and George L (age 1).

Emerson Raines married Martha Viles (nee Atterson) in NOV 1890; they applied for their marriage bond on 07 NOV 1890, were apparently married on 08 NOV 1890, though on the second page of the bond, the date of marriage is noted as 10 NOV 1890. The marriage bond indicates his age as 53, and that this is his third marriage. Her age is indicated as 26, and this is her second marriage.

Emerson Rains, age 65, is enumerated in the 1900 census in the Mullentown, Wayne County, KY in the residence of his son General Grant Raines (noted on the census as General G Rains, age 27). Also residing here is Grant's wife Mary W (age 26), and their children Frederick L (age 7), Herbert Mc (age 4), and William H (age 2).

In the 1910 census, William Raynes (sic), age 75, is enumerated in Civil District 3, Scott County, Tennessee, along with his 51-year-old wife Martha, and their children Harman (sic) (age 17), Vernie (age 15), and Stella (age 13).
